Seems to me that the only country that has cocked this one up well and good is Thailand.

Thailand is just working within the Interpol system that was set up by international agreement.  That agreement becomes a farce when signatories to the agreement begin to decide that they will abide by some request and refuse others.  Blaming Thailand for doing what Interpol signatories have agreed to do under the Interpol system is ludicrous.
And Australia is acting like a schizophrenic who has stopped taking their Haldol: first they issue the Interpol Red Notice for this guy's arrest, then they crucify Thai authorities for honoring that Red Notice.

They're crucifying the authorities for being ridiculous. A mistake may well have been made but that doesn't mean Thailand can't rectify it. They can release this man right now. The only people who would care are Bahrain. And even they know they ain't getting him back. The only thing Bahrain can hope to get back is that brown envelope; and they have two hopes of that.

It doesn't matter who stuffed up with the Red Notice. What is important is that this young man is recognized as a refugee and should be treated accordingly by returning him to Australia.

If Thailand continues to refuse do so, then Fifa and all international sporting bodies should impose a ban on all Thai sportsmen and women. Refusing to allow them to compete on the international circuit will certainly get the attention of this government.

Hit them where it hurts; that is what is needed. This diplomacy s&%t won't work with this mob. [Just ask the Uyghurs]

How about Australians boycott all Thai goods and stop coming to Thailand for holidays, hit them where it hurts, in the pocket.

But that was a pretty young lady.

Return him to Australia and let the Bahreinis deal with the Australians directly. Unbelievable that Thailand cannot get rid of this hot potato which - for once - is really not their problem!

Yes - it is Thailand's problem because the treatment of this man - sending him in shackles without shoe to court - made the inhumanity in this country obvious to the world. Which is a good thing

Anyone commenting on this without reading that article in today’s newspaper is an ignoramus...Thailand could end this today without breaking and laws or doing anything diplomatically wrong...they have created this mess out of nothing...this does not need to be happening in any way, shape or form.

You are the ignoramus because you keep saying about reading this English newspaper and about reading this article when you do not give a link to either the newspaper or the article to read

The stupidity of the Australian Prime Minister with his statement about the use of the shackles is beyond belief when all prisoners that are being transported to the courts from the remand centre are shackled in the same way that this has been done. He needs to have a good look at how stupid he is and how he does not know what happens in his own country for which he is supposed to be the leader of. But then again he was never elected by the people instead he back stabbed the previous Prime Minister to get the position. Much like a military coup in Thailand

Australia got a bit overzealous here & sent the Interpol notice to Thailand without any thought of the consequences.

Thailand acted on the notice & the rest is history.

The legal requirements once arrest has been made are tiresome & long, which involves International Law & and any treaties in place.

It will take time & patience & all Australia can do now is "ask"

The poster is probably referring to the Bangkok Post, I thought links to the BP were routinely removed by the mods.

Since 2003, I've spent between 2 and 6 months per year in Thailand and have spent 10s of thousands of Ozy $s. This is the last straw, and I for one will not be coming here again unless some evidence of human rights are shown in this case. I urge others to do the same. There are plenty of other places to go spend your money and time.

Looks like the Aussies have played a blinder.  They waited until he was out of Oz, before actioning the Red Alert, in doing so they passed on the pressure to the Thais.  Yes Oz is protesting, and it all looks good in the media, however, seems to be a well orchestrated plan.

As for the shackles, everyone gets put in them, Thai or foreign, as a convicted criminal (Bahrain courts), why treat him differently.

I might be wrong, just my opinion.

Remember not long ago when there was a big bikie thing here in Thailand, I think it was either in Pattaya or Phukett and the heads of the Rebels bikie gang from Perth came to Thailand and the Australia Federal Police contacted Thailand and they stopped them at the airport and sent some of them back to Australia but there was one of them was not an Australian and Australia would not accept him back so he spent time in detention here and was then deported back to his home country, Britian. He was married with 3 or 4 kids and his family were stuck in Australia because Britian did not want her because she was married vto a top outlaw Rebels bikie club member

“The Interpol’s red notice issued by Canberra on al-Araibi reached the Thai side before he arrived here. Interpol was very quick and we arrested him at the request of Bahrain,” Don told reporters.

Why did Canberra issue the red notice - computer fault ? - overzealous bureaucratic ? (who undoubtedly has lost his job now) - I am just trying to understand what has happened here.

Jakarta: The diplomatic stoush between Canberra and Bangkok over Hakeem al-Araibi has escalated, with the Australian government declaring it did not issue the Red Notice for the footballer's arrest.

The strongly-worded statement from the Australian embassy in Bangkok comes a day after the Thai Foreign Ministry  suggested it had "received the Red Notice alert from the Australian Interpol".

But someone on here has already stated that Thailand is NOT a signatory.  Which is true.
