Thailand was ranked 99 out of 180 countries and territories in the 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which shows that despite some progress, many countries are still failing to make serious inroads against graft. The index ranks the countries and territories by their perceived levels of corruption in the public sector according to experts and businesspeople, on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.

how much did they have to pay to get such a low rating. ????

  • Thailand would need to start paying the civil service a living wage to see any real improvement. That's unlikely to happen any time soon.

Corruption is considered a legitimate business model; especially if it "helps my family".

the Corruption Perceptions Index still fails to see the magnitude of the problem. :clap2:

a way of life here; decision-makers here have seen much and perhaps engaged in corruption to get where they are so nothing will change

i am as corrupt as much as the situation demands  ie  if i am asked to pay for a document which should be for free  i pay up to secure said document  am i condoning corruption by doing this?   or just going with the flow ?

The problem in thailand, is that there is no one who is willing to put out their neck and risk it! Unlikely where most of us come from, where people really have sacrified themselves for the better and higher than temselves. Desperation makes changes, and as long the desperation is not great enough, nobody do nothing.

The corruption model does work, just look at the teflon economy.

think the graph is a load of nonsense, a 10 year old school kid could organise a better way to present the somewhat dodgy facts.

That infantile infographic looks like it was made by a 5 year old. What is the significance of having 4 devil emojis on the bottom left? Or the correlation of the countries to their spot on the smile? Why is one eye darker than the other? Do the people most likely to view this really need a basic 1 sentence definition of corruption taking up valuable space? Whoever made this graphic is keeping their job due to corrupt hiring procedures, not due to their merit.

There's no use beating our breasts about corruption in Thailand when we participate in it. Anyone who uses a visa agent is facilitating corruption. I'd much prefer, for convenience, to give a traffic cop 200 baht on the spot rather than wait around at a police station to pay the regulation fine and do the associated paperwork. It's even more preferable when I think of fines costing a month's income in my country of origin.

We all condone corruption here, except those aspiring to canonization.

Always hear about corruption but still wonder where exactly it happens...??

In more than 10 years in Thailand I never had to pay a bribe

so I suppose it's mainly around Thai with Thai business

and doesn't really concern expats...?

you are adding to the corruption - BUT you are being held by the short and curlies and needs dictate the decision (unfortunately)????

These sorts of simplistic presentations  cannot even begin to touch on the extent of the problem.

When every level of every government organization is thoroughly corrupt (meaning that every position, every service, every function is for sale) the word becomes almost meaningless

Corruption in Thailand is not a deviation from some ‘ideal’ norm…it is the norm. As such, while some of its forms may shape-shift…its substance isn't going to change any time soon.

You might prefer it but that is the reason why Thailand's road are deadly (no real working police force with high fines). Why we have smog, no real checks on cars or burning as a backhander will do.

Many of Thailands problems are caused by corruption. Plus even worse a corrupt cop arresting an innocent because the bad guy has paid him off, or making evidence appear / disappear.

So being against corruption is a good thing, corruption is also the reason of the street protests. Because if being in power was not so profitable, the politicians and junta would not fight about it. So in a way it certainly is a big problem.

I agree. However, as a farang/falang living here, I have zero input or influence on corruption. When it starts to affect me adversely, I'll do something about it.

Nothing wrong with a bit of corruption them were the days in Thailand

are you sure about that. :cheesy:

I suspect the  true size of the problem is much higher than anyone can imagine here, yes its a way of life here and most parts of Asia and its not going to change. So long as everyone still gets their cut everyone is happy and if it stops would the place all fall down? I don't think anyone involved wants it to stop and the powers that be at any time would find it to big a job to dismantle it. Not hear much from the current PM about stamping it out have you? From shops with no customers that continue to trade to the agents who can help you its so inter twinned in the society here all we can do is live with it and let it not affect us too much.

The only thing I do is refuse to partake in it. Paying the regular fine not a backhander. Though I admit I have paid the backhander, not because of the height of the fine but because its not always easy to find the police station where you need to pay.

Other than that its indeed to do anything about it. But it is already affecting us badly. Roads that are breaking down, because the government official took his cut and the construction company in its turn could use sub standard materials. Its all linked but your right as a foreigner not much we can do about it.

You are being blackmailed by corrupt civil servants but that's normal in Thailand...
