how much did they have to pay to get such a low rating. ????

  • Thailand would need to start paying the civil service a living wage to see any real improvement. That's unlikely to happen any time soon.

Corruption is considered a legitimate business model; especially if it "helps my family".

Always hear about corruption but still wonder where exactly it happens...??

In more than 10 years in Thailand I never had to pay a bribe

so I suppose it's mainly around Thai with Thai business

and doesn't really concern expats...?

Oh, you are one of the many that don't talk to your wife. Just hand the money over and expect things to sort itself out. For sure have never built anything in the last 10 years.

If your post was sarcasm I didn't get it????

The problem in thailand, is that there is no one who is willing to put out their neck and risk it! Unlikely where most of us come from, where people really have sacrified themselves for the better and higher than temselves. Desperation makes changes, and as long the desperation is not great enough, nobody do nothing.

As long time Thai watches will testify , you need to be careful when attempting to reveal corruption, otherwise you might just disappear or wake-up dead in the morning.

The backhanders trying to prevent that were bigger than the ones gunning to the hub position.

Hahaha, good point

Corruption in Thailand is something that makes our life here much more enjoyable. Paying a cop 100 baht is better than paying the govt. $200 for not using your indicator. My wife just had her licence suspended for not paying a "failure to vote" fine. All fixed up now, as we were out of the country, but what a hassle! You forget how lucky we are living in Thailand, where, if you keep your nose reasonably clean, you can live a much better life than the nanny states we've all rejected!
Can't wait to get back in a few weeks time!

Consider that if you were to get t-boned by the Truck driver who's 'brakes failed'... the same guy who paid his 200b 'tea money' the day before when he was caught jumping a light...

We may not like the 'nanny-state'... but much of it is in place to save lives... of course there is also plenty of bumf we want to avoid... but your driving example is not the best if we are discussing the nanny state vs corruption - for ultimately its corruption that makes the roads much more dangerous...  its corruption that makes life in general here much more dangerous...

Some middle ground is required and the 'anti-nanny-staters' don't seem to see that for the absence of regulation which makes 'you' free to do whatever you want whenever you want also makes anyone free to do whatever they want, whenever they want, and some of what people want ranges from the inconsiderate to downright dangerous for those near or surrounding them....

For example... the nanny state makes it safer for our kids to simply cross a road....  (I don't know of course, but its possible the motorcyclist was speeding, didn't have a license, his bike was maybe not roadworthy, brakes? etc etc)....

This! Thais have no will to sacrifice themselves. This is a fundamental lacking in the culture. No bravery among the society.

the Corruption Perceptions Index still fails to see the magnitude of the problem. :clap2:

When I first was introduced to LOS 1985, a fellow Scot I got to know well and had been here for years before me had a saying.

" There are two ways of doing things, one is by corruption and the other is by taxation. With corruption you have some say in how much you pay and know exactly where the money goes. With taxation you have no say in how much you pay and certainly do not know where your money goes, now tell me which is best "

This has stayed with me all these years in LOS.

You are right; I don't talk to my wife... because I have none.

"Never built anything"?? What are you talking about?

Not sarcasm at all,

I honestly don't see when an expats who respect rules should have to pay bribes.

I refuse, but I am not always 100% true to my word. I have paid the backhander a few times long ago as I did not want to find a police station to pay the fine. Not a matter of amount but not being familiar in an area.
