BANGKOK, 21st February 2019 (NNT) – Thai authorities seized 247 million methamphetamine pills in a series of coordinated drug raids across Thailand from November 2018 to January 2019.

The Spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, Lt. Gen. Kongcheep Tantravanich, said the Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, was given a briefing about the three-month drug suppression operations conducted by military, police, and administrative officials.

During the operations, the authorities also seized 3,455 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 800 kilograms of heroin, almost 9,000 kilograms of marijuana, kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) leaves, and opium.

Maj. Gen. Kongcheep said over 23,000 drug-related arrests were made during the last three months.

He said Gen. Prawit had expressed his gratitude to all government agencies taking part in these operations.

I expect we'll see an increase in these arrests over the next month accompanied by lots of news coverage and photo ops.

Is the climb in numbers a demonstration of the success of the drug producers or of the drug suppression units? Far from this being a sign of the defeat of drugs its a sign that the suppliers are moving into a higher gear of production. Far too much money being made for this to stop.

Who counts all these seized pills & where are they 'stored'?

Use your imagination.

OMG, the minivan drivers ADHD self-medication seized, will we be going slower or faster now?

Don't laugh or ignore the many pinched men sitting on the sidewalks begging with open hands, one of them may be your local dealer.

With numbers like this being touted just who is taking all these drugs?? Are we suppose to believe that Thailand is a country of drug users and each and every person takes Ice, Yaba?? Every week we read in the Post or Nation about a drug bust where millions of pills are seized and yet nothing seems to stem the tide. I wonder if the World Health Organization has anything worthwhile to say about this epidemic in Thailand?? Thailand The Land of Drugs, welcome.

...you can't tell me that 250million pills have been seized...a fraction of what are being made...and the powers that be don't know where the labs are and the route the bulk chemicals that are needed take...come on!

Many of the pills are made in Myanmar , land controlled by warlords who use the drugs and money to finance their war

What is that 2 a month for every Thai ?

They are still all off the heads in my village so not doing enough and it's no good trying to shut the gate after the horse has bolted.

as I've said before the drug epidemic in Thailand is payback from past corruption by all the authorities.

Measure about 10 each individually, get the average, then weigh the whole lot. Divide by the average single pill weight.

They keep saving them up because the get rewarded by how many pills ????

soon it will be in the billions ????

A village near here the biggest house and shop is owned by a local policeman.

We use to rent some land for farming 47 rie, we gave up the rent, since then the land has been sold twice, last time a local policeman brought it 10 million baht, he has spent another 500k on improvements you can not say the bank loaned him all that money.

How many of these drugs go in the front door, then back out through the back door.

There's only four Thais capable of this sum and none of them work for the police.
