Pressure rises on Gen Prayut to debate other PM candidates

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is coming under increasing pressure to take part in political debates with other prime ministerial candidates.

The People’s Network for Elections in Thailand (PNET), a non-governmental organization monitoring elections in Thailand, today posted a poem on its Facebook page calling for individuals, who aspire to become future leaders of Thailand, to have the courage to participate in political debates.

PNET did not mention the current Prime Minister and candidate for the pro-junta Palang Pracharat party by name, though his party has yet to respond to invitations to join live, nationally televised debates with the other candidates. Last week, Democrat party leader, former prime minister and candidate for the next premiership Abhisit Vejajiva challenged Prime Minister Prayut to join a debate.

  • From what I have read the PM has little debating skills. He has controlling discussion skills and bullying skills, talking about himself skills a limited vocabulary and is inclined toward crabbiness.

  • Perhaps his cardboard cut out would be a suitable proxy?

He would be destroyed in a debate so there is no chance of it happening.

His minders would do well to keep him away from intelligent dialogue.

There would be less chance of it assaulting the other candidates.

Too democratic for this PM. Too much like the way a real democracy functions. Too bad; a televised debate would have been very educational for the masses.

Everybody (with a functioning brain, that is) knows that Prayuth is absolute mud in almost every way. It's a shame that this debate will never come to pass though as his handlers know just how dreadful he will be, and that the inevitable crash and burn will be too big and brutal to cover up

Well they have done a great job of that,  Oh, so you meant the intelegent dialogue of others. Yep, got it.

On a practical note; I doubt that there is sufficient popcorn in South East Asia to satisfy the demand!

Debate with other candidates...... laughable thats what it is.

Just think about it..... I am speaking you shut up or you get a punch in the mouth.

when the senate appointed persons will vote him in again,

he does not need the debate to convince Joe public.

Great idea. It would be an opportunity for the nation to see how limited an intellect this man has. And would be an ample display of why he has fared so poorly in running the nation for the past five years.

It is one thing to order soldiers and cronies to perform tasks. It is another to openly debate far more intelligent peers. Lats get it on!

God...does not lower himself to ‘debate’ with mere mortals.

I watched Prayuth once talking on tv and had to switch to another channel soon because the garbage that came out of the mouth of somebody so full of himself was just unbearable.
On the other hand I watched Thanathorn live on Facebook 2 days ago and could not stop watching him and his party leadership. He is charismatic, intelligent, witty and talks about a host of issues free from his heart.

He is one of the few idealists left in politics today and it shows when he talks - his phrase “ I come from the 1% but fight for the 99% “ is catching on with voters - because he means it.
Prayuth would look like the fake fool he is next to him - so he will never join a debate unless it is staged and fake like he is!

Hence Prayut - via his lackeys - trying to remove Thanathorn from the election.

Prayut take part in a televised debate?  Not in this lifetime.!

Yes of course - that is the only way Prayuth and his cronies could “win” an election - by dissolving all other parties!

It would be very difficult and out of character for a 4 star Thai  General to understand the term, voicing an opinion, from the public's point of view , Thai Generals have very limited knowledge of how to handle any topic of a public interest without getting hot under the collar , for at the end of the day as far as they are concerned there word or orders are law, getting the finger sign from seventy percent of the population, isn't within their scope of understanding.

Dunno, maybe they could do it like this, then we could see who's pulling his strings.

And knowing Prayut's short fuse, he'd probably want to use a vat of sulphuric acid too.

He would be lucky to last 10 minutes before blowing a fuse and stomping out.

He may do what he do best to exercise his article 44 to ban the debate reasoning it will cause confusion to the general public.

It should be a requirement if he is a man of any stature. But then again he might think he is above debating with such lower people, and then on the real other hand the farce of election should be a drop in the basket for him anyway.

Even in the unlikely event of Prayuth participating in a debate on equal terms with other politicians, I suspect the other participants would conform to what are sometimes seen as Thai cultural values and be at pains to avoid confrontation and even difficult questions. In other words, Prayuth would be accepted as a "normal" candidate for the position of PM and would not be challenged at all on past actions which in other countries would be regarded as crimes.

Not in this lifetime... a live debate nah !!!

Only if he was given the questions ahead of time, was allowed to give his practiced answers, and was guaranteed that no-one would question his answer or ask for an out-of-turn response.

Could you imagine him in an American style candidate live debate... he'd get slaughtered!

Absolutely.

He would get his arse burnt big  time in a political debate ( he probably doesn't even know where the countries are of some of the World leaders he's met as geography not taught in most Thai schools - pin the tail on the donkey etc
