What Actually Makes You an “Old-Hand” in Asia?
I started learning Thai with a Thai partner in my late twenties. By my early thirties, I had conversational fluency, and now I would say I speak at roughly eighty five percent of an adult native-born speaker’s level. I can usually follow conversation on any topic, understand the news on TV, etc. Does that make me an old hand? I’m not sure. I never thought of it that way. It has certainly helped me understand local people in ways someone without the language could not. Things are a lot more straightforward in Thailand when you can communicate properly. But it is not all positive. There are situations where I am actually better off not speaking Thai with locals and I have adjusted to that. Fluency means you also pick up a lot of mundane or trivial conversations around you that would have otherwise gladly gone unnoticed. Sometimes it also comes with higher social expectations, as people assume that I understand certain cultural nuances. It can cut both ways, you gain convenience and access in some situations, but there are times when blending in as an unknowing foreigner has its perks too. I do not think age is much of a factor in learning a language. If you have the discipline to memorize vocabulary and push yourself to use it daily with native speakers, your fluency can grow at any age. I studied Spanish on my own for a while, memorized a lot of words, but without anyone to practice with, it faded quickly. It reinforced my belief that age is not the issue, but consistent, real-world use is the key to success with language learning. Memorizing alone is not enough. You have to speak it, live it, and engage with it regularly. -

In the past DT has (reportedly) reaped millions of $$$ in impressively short amounts of time from his small-donation supporters. I suspect that very soon (like in an hour from now?) he will be using media appearances to beg for donations to his defense fund: support your favorite president, fight the deep state, defeat the Biden crime family, the extreme far-left radicals, the ones causing whales to die of cancer, etc. The response (or lack of) to the child molester rep would be very telling. But wait, what if Fox doesn't carry his plea? Myself, I think this pursuit of kids is heinous. But I also don't understand the allure these guys have. It doesn't make any difference, the documents will either be blank or just pages of gibberish, so this whole "release the documents" thing the media is banging on about is just another "here Fido, go chase the stick!" ploy. It's the same as with questions: him and his will vocally respond but will not give an answer. -

For me as a non-American it is ovious, that there is a very simple reason for this: they all are on the Epstein client list, be it democratic or republican policy makers. This is, how deep corruption (and corrupted morals) go in American politics. It should dawn on any American by now, that they are living in a swamp so deep, that there simply is nobody able to govern without having made himself dirty. What better guarantee for silence than everybody being guilty -- mutually assured destruction. This still does not mean that the guy sreaming the loudest that he would reelase all the files while he was in the opposition should get away with being a child molester and rapist. They all should be sitting in jail, without exception -- a good place coming to mind would be Alligator Alcatraz -- just an idea... -

Indeed it does not. But then, surely, there has been extensive investigations by the justice department in every single one of these persons, because that is what it is supposed to do when hearing of a crime of this magnitude. There must be literally tons of documents exonerating every single one on the flight list (just as an example). This would especially include Donald Trump, because he is on that list, we know for sure. Why does he not release these documents exonerating him, at least? It makes him look extremely guilty if he does not even choose this very, very low-hanging fruit to show the public that he was not actively involved in raping minors. -
