MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australian police said they were investigating after a teenager smashed an egg on a controversial right-wing lawmaker who had blamed New Zealand's mass mosque shootings on the country's immigration programme.

The footage, shared widely on social media, showed Senator Fraser Anning being approached from behind at a political event on Saturday, before having an egg cracked on the back of his head.

The footage showed Anning appearing to try to hit the person, before that person was dragged to the ground.

Victoria Police released a statement saying the incident was being investigated "in its entirety" and that it involved a 17-year-old boy.

Anning has received widespread condemnation following comments he made that saying cause of New Zealand's worst peace time shooting was letting "Muslim fanatics" migrate to the country.

"(Anning's) conflation of this horrendous terrorist attack with issues of immigration, in his attack on Islamic faith specifically, these comments are appalling and they're ugly and they have no place in Australia," Australia's Prime Minister Morrison told journalists on Saturday.

Calls to Anning's electoral and parliamentary offices went unanswered on Sunday.

A GoFundMe campaign had raised more than A$19,000 (£10,128.8) for the teenager to cover the cost of legal fees and so he could "buy more eggs" by Sunday and the hashtag #EggBoy was trending on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Australia's immigration minister announced on Saturday that controversial conservative speaker Milo Yiannopoulos would not be allowed to enter Australia following Yiannopoulos describing Islam as a “barbaric” and “alien” religion.

"Mr Yiannopoulos’ comments on social media regarding the Christchurch terror attack are appalling and foment hatred and division," immigration minister David Coleman said in a statement.

Australian Brenton Harrison Tarrant, 28, a suspected white supremacist, was charged with murder on Saturday after 49 people were killed and dozens wounded in mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques.

It isn't a race to the bottom. I wish all religos would start to think for themselves. I don't condone shooting defenceless people of any belief, anywhere.

The poor Christian people of Pakistan, etc. Okay, I will bite.

Christian people in Muslim countries didn't 'stumble' upon God and Jesus, they were sold a false ideology and bullshit notion that there is a merciful God, who would forgive them all their 'sins' and allow them into 'heaven'.

To make it worse, some missionaries may have really believed this crap but many were there for their own nefarious pleasures.

Unfortunately the 'converts' to Christianity were forced to denounce their own religion, alienating them much like lepers in their communities. In many cases subject to violent retribution, cast out of their homes.

So yes, we should pity Christian minorities but don't forget it was outside interference by Christians that put them in their predicament.

The best bit of it all is all the outraged mouth-breathers who are quick to call others snowflakes getting offended by someone getting a measly egg broken on them.

These Chch shooting stories really have brought all the racist expats out in force though

Yep. The hypocrisy from the right of centre is breathtaking.

You're irresponsible.

It appears this incident was premeditated for the sole purpose of making money via crowd funding. A 17 year old in Australia is a minor and won't be charged. There are no legal fees. Its all about quick profit. What's next? A serious crime against a public figure. 100,000 dollars maybe.

Next ? Homicide. 500 K.

It's going to happen for sure unless crowd funding is shut down.

All States and self-governing Territories of Australia have adopted 10 years of age as a uniform age of criminal responsibility.

What a waste of an egg.

This is a bloke who raised the term ‘final solution’ in parliament.

Also worth noting that although he might have been justifiying in giving the kid he first smack after the egging, he then went for a second, and then two of his goons jumped the kid.

Shows you the type of bloke we are dealing with.

On Oz news police are reviewing due to second punch. The egg man was released without charge. Regards the Senator, Keating's comment was spot on "Unrepresentative swill"

When it comes hate speeches and critizing muslim, it is freedom of speech.
When a muslim does it, it is terrorism or planning terrorism.
Just be fair. No need to push your hate speech rhetorics.
Such hate speech needs to be banned so we dont get such white trash supremacists killing people around.

Whitewashing continues. Whitewashing this massacre with some other incidents again done by religious fanatics.
So, when a muslim does a terrorist attack, will you be saying like this happenes bc of a white supremacist animal killed 50 muslim in a mosque?
Or will you just say like 'it is a terrorist attack by muslim'.
Be fair or please dont distribute your white supremacist christian ideas around.
