Supermarket Produce Weighing

Featured Replies

New to LOS.  The other day I bought a bag of grapes at Tops and took it to the cashier.  She gave me a very flustered look and walked off and came back with a label on the bag.  So, could someone please explain to me how to do this weighing myself?  I looked at the scale and was totally confused.

Nothing new I assume.

It's just tricky to find out whether the bag has to be weighed at the department (fruit in your case) or not.

If the bag has absolutely no label with bar-code then sure it had to be weighed at the department.

Look for a set of electronic scales in the produce section. Stand there and someone will come over and print a price sticker for you.

Makro/Tesco/Big-C have similar set-up, look for a barcode sticker on the produce, if not, it needs to be weighed and price-tagged at the produce service counter, before going to any checkout.

Butchery counters operate in the same way.

Not sure about Tops because i usually just buy at Big C and Tecso, but in these places somebody will operate the scale for you, you are not supposed to do it by yourself. Just stand at the scale and look helpless, then somebody will come ????

I find many supermarket staff really quite helpful. Foodland stands out as having well-trained staff in relation to the Thai norm. But I live outside the tourist ghetto areas. Whenever I enter a tourist ghetto, I often encounter a jaded attitude if not outright hostility with those who have to work in a service role.
