In a month-long crime sweep, police nabbed more than 1,000 suspects and seized 143 firearms, 52,791 meth-amphetamine pills, 316 grams of crystal meth, 1,392 kilogams of marijuana and 235kg of krathom leaves, Provincial Police Region 8 chief Pol Lt-General Pongwuth Pongsri said on Friday.

The suspects were arrested in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chumphon, Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi and Phuket provinces between February 2 and March 20. Of the suspects, 161 face gun-related charges, 982 drug-related charges, while the remaining 79 were arrested on the basis of arrest warrants related to old cases, he said.

The police sweep – targeting dark influential figures, hitmen, people dealing in weapons and drugs, as well as fugitives – was carried out to boost public confidence ahead of the elections.

The Thai police tackling crime? Now there's a novelty. Just imagine what could be done if this happened every month of the year.

"...Over 1,000 suspects nabbed in crime sweep..."

'Crime Sweep'?

Er... Ahem... Isn't this called 'policing'?

And, if it is not normal 'Policing', shouldn't it be?

It seems like a reasonable question...

So now the police can go back to doing nothing as this exercise was only conducted "to boost public confidence ahead of the elections". Surely, to maintain public confidence they should be doing this on a daily basis! It's their job for goodness sake!

Next will be a Maj-Gen telling a story of no Thais involved in crime personally I don't trust a Lt-Gen with all the facts????

Can we have an election every month?

Err, maybe not as every single prison cell would be overflowing, like the black hole of Calcutta.

Ha ha! We know why there's a ban - otherwise there would be plenty of boos in Prayut's direction.

I wanna be a dark influential person! Do I need to see the local Kru Khmer?

I guess they won't be voting tomorrow.

The headline should read - Crime Sweep disappointment - only netted 1,000

What am I going to do this weekend now?

Too bad that can't put that sort of zeal in their enforcement efforts aimed at capturing arsonists who are burning down Northern Thailand and poisoning the air.

Who verifies the claims?! They could say anything.... and often do!

That's a rather long month, from Feb 2nd to Mar 20th ("month-long crime sweep"). The overall figures don't look all that impressive when taking into consideration how long they were busy sweeping.

Clearing criminals and "anti social" elements off the streets one day before election. Well done ;-)

Doing things like these on a daily basis?

Would you accept that in your own country, razzias I mean?

Those are normal in a police state, as far as I know.

Or policing followers of a certain politician that heeded the cal to burn down buildings.

People say legalise drugs... drugs are the scourge of society!

From the profiteers at the top to the street sellers.. drugs will eventually seal the fate & downfall of any country !

1,000 criminals in over a month.london has more arrests over a weekend.

They must have missed hundreds of thousands by not working 24/7 ????
