thaimeup
After many years in Thailand it would be hard not to agree that there are many, many Katoys visible wherever you go, but lately, perhaps due to my own lack of observation, I've noticed even more Toms (lesbians) than ever. Always recognizable with their short cropped hair, breasts flattened under macho Tshirts and the obligatory Big Ben sized watch on their wrist, they cruise a shopping mall near you. The comical exaggerated male swagger is something to see as is the sometimes stunning feminine girlfriend (a touch of jealousy here) on her arm. Usually it seems to be teenage girls still in secondary education, but older ones are there all the same. So, is it a fashionable trend that they're going through, or is it just another Thai way? Ijustwannateach
On the presumption that the opening poster has a serious query, I've hidden over 7 comments from a high school football team. If the opening poster preferred this to be a banter thread, I'll restore the comments and move the thread to Bedlam, where it would then belong. If not, it'll go very shortly to the gay subforum. Perhaps better to drop it if it has offended.

WaiWai
On the presumption that the opening poster has a serious query, I've hidden over 7 comments from a high school football team.Good work, Ijustwannateach. I saw those comments, from men who evidently need to demonstrate their high (erhmmm ) testosterone levels by using tired and predictable "jokes" to make loud grunting noises on internet forums, within moments of being "threatened". This kinda thing sorts sheep from goats real fast, doesn't it ?
Heng
It's a combination of several things... and I don't think fashion has much to do with it. Gays and lesbians as a significant percentage of any population. Higher tolerance/acceptance of them in the LOS. (Higher) stigma of being a single woman vs. stigma of having a lesbian partner; this is often true for older ladies, but sometimes for younger ones as well. And the (lower) stigma of having an open relationship with another girl vs. the stigma of of having an open relationship with a boy; this is often true for younger girls who try to cling to older conservative norms of their parents and traditional society. Probably more to it all as well, as with most things. Edited March 3, 2007 by Heng
qualtrough
I think some of this might be related to the LUG phenomena as it is or was known in the US. LUG=Lesbian Until Graduation, and referred to college woman who either engaged in lesbian relationships or hung out with those who did, only to abandon the lifestyle after they graduated. I suspect the same thing is going on here as well. For some permanent, for others just a fad.
Ijustwannateach
Thanks for the sensible replies, folks. As this appears to be a serious thread, I'll move it now to the Gay Subforum where it will be more at home (I hope). Thaimeup, I understand- it's just that the real lesbians reading the forum might object to this thread being taken over by that certain dim percentage of the population who imagine that "lesbian" means "porn actress performing for straight men." Nebukanezar
Kinda sexy actually, For me I just see 2 girls whom at least one of which is almost certainly Bi. For the open, accepting Hetero male such as my self a few well chosen words and a lil time can often lead to some very fun menage' action going on. YAY Bi chicks... even the girls that tend to cross dress as such are often much softer underneath that exterior than they let on too.
peter991
I think Heng summed it up fairly well. The acceptance of homosexuality, transvestite and transgender behaviour by Thai people is one of the main reasons many of us either visit or live in Thailand. Gay guys in general don't tend to notice two women together. Two women holding hands walking down the street wouldn't attract too much attention anywhere in the west. In most places, two guys walking down the street holding hands would. In Thailand, my partner's sister lives with her girlfriend and both are as accepted as my bf and me. I thought one of the all-time classic statements from an Australian Government minister was the suggestion that widowed ladies should form lesbian relationships as women outlive men.
