Wild elephants damage durian orchard in Chanthaburi

Around 10 wild elephants raided a durian orchard in Chanthaburi's Tha Mai district late on Wednesday and stayed until Thursday morning, causing around Bt200,000 of damage.

 

The orchard in Tambon Khao Kaew belongs to couple Thanom Lampheungwong, 65, and Piyarat Lampheungwong, 61.

 

Thanom said the elephants came down from Khao Kaew and damaged the area around their house before they entered the durian orchard.

 

He said the elephants returned to the mountain at 4am.

 

Thanom said 15 durian trees were toppled and 15 others had their branches torn down.

 

He said his durians would have been ready for harvest on April 10.

Sad to see that the wild elephants are have their land taken away by durian farmers.

There will soon be nowhere for these amazing animals to live.

Hmm, let me guess, what was there first: the elephants and other wildlife and fauna, or the invading and all-destroying, greedy, selfish humans, who, instead of being thankfull and modest about the gifts of nature, consider it all as their rightfull and exclusive property...? Who does NOT know the answer to this question?

Are the humans responsible for the 'climate change'? I really doubt it! But when the question would be about what is going to destroy this planet, I'd answer 99.9% sure: the human species, leaving the 00.1% to asteroïds and geological activity.

'ratcatcher': what the heck? What are those invading human creatures you call 'poor farmers' doing there with their durians (...for the chinese 'rats'?) in the first place, and why, no other places left?

The culprits are the invaders, let them eat up those 'calling cards', and go get greedy elsewhere, and leave their homeland to the elephants!

The Thai farmers are 'invaders'? Chinese people are 'rats'?

The elephants came down from the mountain area and destroyed his annual crop. That's him with no income for the next twelve months and you think that's a victory for the elephants? If you knew anything about these people you wouldn't make such ridiculous comments

So he grows an elephant delicacy and the herd catches a whiff of it and follow the odour until they find the trees laden with one of their favourite fruits. 

What do you imagine the elephants do next? Stand around and discuss whether they steal his fruit and leave him destitute for a year or bog in and eat the lot.

You're missing the point. I'm saying don't blame the farmer and champion the elephants. This is a man's livelihood that has been destroyed. Mass deforestation is to blame, not the elephants and certainly not the poor farmer trying to feed his family

I let you be the judge about 'ridicule', as it takes someone in the know to judge of a matter...

OK, especially for you then: elephants live there long, long time happy-happy; then humans, more and more, come and take away land where elephants were happy-happy; the humans have dirty disease called money-more-more, elephants don't understand; the invading humans grow yummy-yummy plants and fruit, a lot and all close together, on elephants' land; elephants have big-big dinner party; humans come very, very angry and make elephants uncomfortable on their land, because of money-less-less (elephants also don't understand); elephants then teach little humans a lesson about respect... 

And this is a sad story, as in the end it are ALWAYS the elephants losing, because of the humans' disease of money-more-more (and another one called make-babies-many-many, but that's another story), Goodnight!

That is actually what they did!! But in the end, the two little ones where buggering the mother and the father enough so they gave in!! Or why you think they toppled the trees, hu? So the little ones could get their snack!

My wife's family farm durian. They are not wealthy, they farm for survival. They run their business in debt all year and rely on the harvest to pay off their loans and see them through to the next year. It's never enough before they need to borrow from the bank again. Their biggest fear is elephants. They need to sleep amongst the trees when the durian are maturing, for fear of a herd wiping out the entire crop overnight. You obviously like to imagine farming is done on a massive industrial scale where great swathes of land have been misappropriated by greedy opportunists. I suggest you go and stay 'baan nawk' to get a grip on reality of how the majority of Thai people work their smallholdings merely to survive from one day to the next.
