Hun Sen blasts US government for 1970 coup

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday blasted the United States for rallying behind the removal of Prince Norodom Sihanouk in 1970 and accused it of supporting Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge. Speaking at a university graduation ceremony in Phnom Penh, Mr Hun Sen said the US backed the removal of the Prince and the establishment of Marshal Lon Nol’s Khmer Republic until its fall in 1975. He then accused the US of supporting the Khmer Rouge regime in the United Nations until 1991.

Mr Hun Sen praised Prince Sihanouk’s regime from 1955 to 1970 as a peaceful period. He said the civil war that followed the Prince’s removal was because of foreign interference. “Even if there were problems, our country had peace,” Mr Hun Sen said, referring to the US’ bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. “But after that coup on March 18, 1970, our country fell into war and everything was destroyed.”

He said that the US government should be held accountable for this. “Our country received many injustices. Do you [US] express your regret in supporting the ousting of Prince Norodom Sihanouk?” Mr Hun Sen said. “I’ve never heard of it. You tend to be a democratic country, but you supported the overthrow of a legitimate head of state and a respectful leader from power.”

Hun Sen, a former soldier for the Khmer Rouge, is now saying they were bad guys.

No gratitude
For your former genocidal commie bosses, where is the love Hun, where’s the love?!

We're sure Tricky Dick Nixon is rolling over in his grave at the news he's still being criticized for the war.

talk about digging up bones!

While he has a point, I assume this is just to deflect from international condemnation of his government...

Perhaps he should be more worried about the blow-back of global criticisms resulting in a 2020 coup.  The word is that Cambodia has 2 billion barrels of oil and 10 trillion cubic feet of gas.  Maybe time to simply shut up and leave well enough alone.  Just saying.

interesting how after the war and bombing the crap out of viet, viet and the usa are now good friends

No mention of the French or Japanese ????

he might have a point but that was 50 years ago and hes had 30 years to say it, surely he can come up with something a bit more exciting?

Hun conveniently forgets to mention it was his leader Pol who decided to do a bit of raping and pillaging in Vietnam that caused the retaliation that brought down the Pol Pot Regime.

Hun Sen and most of his fellow generals fled to the welcoming arms of Thailand when the going got hot.
