Road safety measures prepared for Songkran

 

   

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Transport has ensured road safety for people during the Songkran festival by tightening safety measures on 111 dangerous routes and putting up signs to advise people to be extra cautious.

 

Transport Minister Arkhom Termphitthayaphaisit has disclosed a plan to safely accommodate road travelers throughout the Songkran festival. It is estimated that the number of people who travel by public transport will increase by 8.66 percent. The number of vehicles on major roads is expected to reach 7.6 million, an increase of 3.43 percent on the Songkran festival last year.

 

The Ministry of Transport has issued measures to reduce the number of accidents and ensure that there are no stranded passengers. It has also tightened safety measures on 111 dangerous routes where accidents have often occured.

 

The Ministry of Transport has installed flashing lights, traffic cones and check points in many risk areas. The authorities will also patrol the roads. The ministry aims to reduce the number of accidents on 111 dangerous routes by 10 percent.

I will be watching them in their tents, smoking and joking, reading their newspapers, watching soccer on the tube, and just having a high old time like in previous years

Complete rubbish. Accidents caused by slippery roads and idiots throwing ice-laden water at scooter riders will not decrease one iota.

I guess the same as so many years...... Set up tents at checkpoints, which are staffed with a large number of police officers (maybe aided by the odd soldier). From time to time, step out to book and fine miscreants who obligingly stop sans helmet (more a danger to themselves than others), driving license or other heinous crime, and perchance the odd drunk......... Meanwhile dangerous moving offences by drivers, licensed or otherwise, sober or inebriated, are only dealt with if they actually do result in an accident.

 

Such preparedness as usual will result in nothing more than carnage as usual.

I remember in Egypt some years ago road signs that read something like(cannot remember exact wording)

 

It is the mark of an intelligent man that obeys the road rules

Won't work, your missing lesson 1:

 

Lesson 1:  Read the sign.  

Just driven from Chiang Mai to BKK, many manned checkpoints and new 90 Kph speed limit/camera signs. The cops at the checkpoints are pulling car drivers over, looks like these are speeders detected by cameras earlier, they have lists. I was lucky! New road markings to assist the camera detection also present.

It might be better if the information was on the phone rather by the road, more chance of them being read...…...LOOK OUT!!
