Video: Small fine, two week suspension and awareness training! Is this coming down hard on minivan drivers?

Caption: Caught - Fined - Sent for awareness training

Dash cam footage from an expressway exit at Sukhumvit Soi 62 showed a public service minivan going completely the wrong way. An accident is only luckily avoided (you will need to fast forward to 2.30 of the video to see this).

Sanook said that the Department of Land transport "came down hard" on driver Anan of the Rangsit to Bang Plee expressway service.

He will be back behind the wheel of his vehicle after a 15 day suspension.

He was fined 2,000 baht.

He has to attend "awareness" training for THREE hours tomorrow.

Here at Thaivisa we would like to ask: Is this coming down hard?

Or is there a better way?

The footage was posted online by Surat Boon.

well better than nothing... it's a start...

Minivan drivers across the entire country are literally the worst drivers on the road.

As an aside - their driving is as bad as TVF's inability to trim videos to just show the interesting bits. Why did we need the first two and a half minutes of the video?

And no one queried why he had turned into an off ramp instead of an on ramp?

Not sticking up for these drivers, some of the worst in the world that I've experienced. When you add up the fine and lost wages it's over 5k which although doesn't seem like much to TV members it't a hefty sum for a lot of Thais. As mentioned earlier it's a start though a tracking system (points?) would be useful in removing repeat offenders completely from the road.

If it is first offence OK. Make sure he does all the driver training.

2nd offence for any blatant breach 12 months suspension & 10,000 Bht fine

I disagree, as far as I am concerned it is the cowboy cement/concrete truck drivers. :coffee1:

No wonder he got confused while driving, he's blindfolded.

Take his licence off him, ban him from driving for life and a couple of years in jail just might reinforce the notion that you cannot do as you please on Thai roads, what a complete and utter <Deleted> ????

^^^^ Fair comment.

Many developped nations noticed that the ultima ratio on road deterrence is to plainly impound the vehicle, (assorted naturally with a harsh fine and a licence suspension).

Give it a thought if you wish to reduce the 22'000+ figure of annual driving fatalities,  on Thai roads.

Awareness tip for minibus drivers: lay off the booze and "uppers" and stop watching onboard TV and texting social media messages while driving.

Simple, really.
