Daily News reported that both victims of Wednesday's fire at Central World were store employees who jumped to their deaths.

They were named as Sakchai Charoensap and Arthit Khamsai.

Daily News said they had been accepted as heroes.

The elder brother and sister of Arthit and his father went to the morgue at Chulalongkorn Hospital to pick up their departed relative yesterday.

Fighting back tears sister Jitra Khamsai, 44, said that her 38 year old brother was an unmarried member of their four person family. He was a playful character who was loved by everyone at his work and in the family. He would help anyone and had worked at Central World for many years.

She said that funeral rites would be held at a temple in the family's hometown of Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand north-east region.

Arthit's brother Janthra Khamsai, 47, said that during the fire he had received a call from his brother. When he pressed accept all he could hear was confusion and loud noises. He got the impression that his brother was trying to say something but the words would not come out.

The line went dead. Janthra called back but but the line went dead again.

He said his brother had worked at Central World for 20 years and always sent money home.

The family said that a lawyer was still discussing compensation payments.

I think I would describe him as a victim rather than a hero. Hope the truth will come out about this fire but somehow I doubt it. No one likes to talk about poor maintenance and health and safety neglect, but those problems are rife here.

Events like this should trigger a response & fresh look at safety & procedures in a complex like this..

however the rush to re-open & say all is fine shows that nothing was learnt!

Hope they sue this damn place

Well of course considering the connection that the owners of Central World have with those that control the country, I doubt very much whether the families of the deceased will get a personal apology.   They will just get an offer of money as if money is adequate compensation for the death of a loved one. Collateral damage, effectively in this case resulting in death,  of owning  a major company making billions, will not be considered of any consequence to this government or Central World families ownership or for that matter anyone of the elite in Thailand.
