PARIS (Reuters) - Notre-Dame Cathedral went up in flames on Monday in a roaring blaze that devastated the Parisian landmark, a searing loss for the city and for France.

Min Buri Provincial Court on Monday approved an initial 12-day detention period for a 57-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, who had confessed to killing his seven-months-pregnant stepdaughter at her Bangkok home on April 11.

Thailand-born stateless boy gets his Thai ID card

So-called "rootless" people, those who were born in Thailand but abandoned at birth and thus have no Thai identification number or household document, can now file for birth certificates and apply for Thai nationality, according to a new law that has been published in the Royal Gazette and comes into effect this week.

Inside job suspected as probe opens into 11 guns missing from Thong Lor police station

National police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda has instructed officers to speedily investigate the case of 11 guns that went missing from Bangkok’s Thong Lor police station in what is suspected to have been an inside job, Metropolitan Police Division 5 chief Pol Maj-General Mongkol Warunno said on Monday.

Private hospitals overcharging: 30-300 percent

More than half the private hospitals operating in Thailand are overcharging for medical services and prescription drugs. Of the private hospitals alleged to be overcharging, the rates have been calculated to be 30% up to 300% over the actual production cost.

Haze: What to do about corn without killing the golden goose?

We have a big, known problem: Corn is a major source of Thailand’s chronic haze crisis. We also have a big, unknown problem: Corn is a link in a multibillion-dollar supply chain that is vital to Thailand and also many of its poorest people.  The really big problem, therefore, is not what to do about corn and corn’s contribution to the haze crisis.

PARIS (Reuters) - A massive fire consumed Notre-Dame Cathedral on Monday, destroying the roof of the historic Paris landmark in a roaring blaze as firefighters battled to prevent one of the main bell towers from collapsing.

‘Buddhist tourism’ idea fraught with difficulty

For most foreign visitors, Thailand is a place to party and soak up the sun, not pursue spirituality

 

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has recognised the inherent value in “Buddhist tourism” – bringing in foreign visitors to experience our religious traditions. Its promotion would certainly be a lot friendlier to the environment, but a good idea and its implementation are two different matters.

Fewer casualties on fourth dangerous day compared to last year

The Thai Embassy in France has recommended that Thais avoid visiting Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and nearby areas after the cathedral suffered a massive fire on Monday evening Paris time.
