Does Thailand have a national police database of people who have committed crimes?

 

I want to find out about a foreigner living in Pattaya who was jailed about a year ago. 

 

I’ve asked a couple of Thais about how to find out more about it from the police  and been met with the usual vague replies. 

 

‘Oh it was long time ago, the police man who dealt with it might have moved... if one month or two months it is easy’

 

That just seems inconceivable that information about a crime can’t be found. I imagine they would have crime data at their fingertips on a police computer system.

If you know his name then go to prison and visit him.

sorry .... I don't mix with people in or from jail.

You might want to jump on the bus and go to the prison.

I wasn't aware that the police would give out information like that "willy nilly" to anybody who asked.. even if they have it, which I imagine they have.

Interesting reply, I mean that really, if it is so good how is it that murderers & rapists who have skipped bail and moved elsewhere with possible multiple arrest warrants out for them manage to evade justice for so many years ? 

 

I used to work as a civilian support worker for a UK police force, I had full access to the Police National Computer (PNC) and that included interrogating and updating the database for People, vehicles, property, crime numbers, wanted notices and a whole host of other stuff, as soon as a person was stopped and D.O.B - full name was given any outstanding arrest warrants or wanted notices was immediately available, what is your experience of the Thai version ??    

National police database don’t make me laugh, they’ve only just discovered Morse Code.

Yes, a good way to confirm he is in prison but I doubt he'd tell the full details of his crime.

Any policeman can access it or only senior cops?

Is they do have a criminal national database can you erase me and all the TV members? 

OP: Your friend's embassy will have the info. However, may not provide the detail unless you are family or permission from the friend. Perhaps ask the person at the embassy to request permission to pass on info from the friend next time they make a consular visit.

There is a national database, where criminal records are matched to unique citizen IDs).

 

Thais who need a document to show any convictions they may have need to take a letter requesting it (for example, from a foreign embassy, to support a visa application) to Special Branch. In Bangkok, that's the police HQ on Rama 1 Road.
