Forty roads at Bangkok's Rattanakosin Island are being closed today (Wednesday) for a rehearsal for May’s coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

The traffic police's Maj Gen Jirasan Kaeosaeng-ek said the 4pm to 9.30pm closures would allow the test run for security and traffic-directing measures.

To minimise congestion, Rajadamnoen Avenue, Sanam Chai, Maharat, Khaosan, Samsen, Lan Luang, Ban Mor, Charoen Krung and other roads would only be closed in sections when the procession was passing through, Jirasan said.

Roads would reopen when the rehearsal had moved on, the police officer added.

He urged motorists to use alternative routes like the Yommarat toll, the Krungthon (Sang Hee) Bridge, Rama 8, Phra Pok Klao Bridge or Memorial bridges.

Jirasan invited people to call the traffic division hotline at 1197 or visitwww.trafficpolice.go.th for more information.
