Three people died and four others were injured in Maha Sarakham on Monday morning when a pickup truck loaded with durians crashed head-on with a trailer truck hauling sand.

Police believe the driver of the pickup, Yingsun Sriwilai, 47, of Muang Kalasin, may have dozed off at the wheel before the 6.30am crash on Phayuk Phumwisai-Wapi Pathum Road in Na Dune district.

He was killed along with a passenger in the front seat, Pikul Chaiyatha, and a six-month-old baby, Pimchanok Sriwilai, who was found lying in the driver’s lap.

Four other passengers in the pickup were injured.

Police said the pickup was carrying the durians from Rayong to Kalasin.

Yet another terrible tragedy. R.I.P

The baby was found lying in the drivers lap? It's bad enough that so many infants are not strapped into appropriate child car seats here but sitting on the lap of the driver is beyond stupid. How can anyone concentrate on driving and take care of a baby at the same time?
Dozed off at the wheel my arse.

I have three Thai Nieces and love them to bits but their parents drive a Pick-Up not wearing seat belts themselves with the two older girls in the back seats and the Baby on her Mothers lap.  I have pleaded with them on many occasions not to do this and even offered to buy a Baby Seat etc but they just laugh and say i worry too much !   You just can't fix stupid.

a recent bkk taxi trip in which the driver was driving like a maniac, speeding, no turn signals, cutting in and out, tailgating, no seatbelt either for him. his taxi was super adorned with protective stuff. he wore multiple amulets

Thats why I take Grab whenever possible (not all taxis are terrible though, but it seems there's a fair chance of getting tool when flagging down a taxi).

In similar cases to the one you have described, I just tell them to pull over, pay whats on the meter and get out.

Others, who when asked have refused to stop watching the movie on their phone loose the fare, when I ask them to pull over and get out or just get out when the taxi is at a stop.

But this isn't a bash taxi drivers thread - its a bash Thai drivers thread, most of whom drive fairly well. But, there is a large proportion who really should not be driving.

Think of the biggest idiots in your class at school, think of how thick they were, thick as two short planks.. really dumb... now consider these idiots are driving !!!..  which is somewhat frightening, but at least these idiots have a basic education and have had driver training...... Transpose that same thought to Thailand where the basic excitation is poor and there is no driver training !
