EC credibility slammed over incorrect ‘correction’ of election results

The Election Commission (EC) had its credibility questioned after it issued a correction for an incorrect but unofficial recount result that was released on Sunday.

Sunday’s announcement of the recount in Nakhon Pathom province said the Future Forward Party had won over the Democrat Party by 65 votes.

But it seems the Democrat was the rightful winner over Future Forward by four votes.

The confusion arose on Sunday when EC commissioner Chatchai Chanpraisri told the press that the recount had found that Future Forward won the election in Nakhon Pathom’s first constituency after the recount.

That led the Democrat Party to challenge the new total, saying it had evidence that showed its candidate Sinthop Kaewpichit had won the constituency with 35,711 votes, while Future Forward candidate Savika Limpasuwanna earned 35,707.

Before the recount, Sinthop was declared the winner in the constituency, but Savika petitioned the announcement, citing mistakes in the counting.

The EC’s secretary-general Jarungvith Phumma admitted on Monday the Democrat account was accurate.

In a press conference, the agency deputy secretary-general Sawang Boonmee said the incorrect results announced on Sunday were unofficial and were made before the counting tally had been completed.

The agency was slammed harshly for the mistake. The Democrat deputy leader Satit Pitutacha wrote on Facebook: ”Please, do not make any more mistake. Your agency has already suffered a severe credibility crisis.”

They, I mean credible group, needs to recount and check every vote again. Something may be saying that someone does not want FFP to have another big win? 4 little votes? When has anyone ever heard of a race that close, except in a one horse town.

This reminds me of the time I was paying the electric bill to my landlady in Phuket, she was diligently making the calculation on the electronic calculator when the number didn't please her, she disregarded that, brushed the device to one side and made up a number that suited her better.

Well if your elbow smelled as bad as politics all over the world I can understand your confusion.

All the rules should have been out in the open long before the election took place. It has taken over 5 weeks for a result to be changed and it seems "just like that!"

The whole process is laughable I am sure everyone who is not a voter here would think that its going to end up in stitch up and then what? Will he people accept it?

Will other countries accept the result was fair and open? How will that affect Thailand's reputation, if it still has one?

Sorry if I sound stupid...but who actually won now?? The democrats or fast forward, for the nakhon pathom constituency in question. Been reading in Thai Rath  etc that its fast forward. This is so bloody confusing. The whole elections should deemed null and redone. The EC is really totally incapable of running the show. Never seen so much cheating etc in my lifetime in Thailand. This must be one of the most horrible and disgraceful moments in the history of thailand. There is nothing to celebrate anymore or be happy about.

And these people wanted to hang onto power long enough to see the Coronation carried through with dignity before the International press.

They thought only they could be the 'good' people, election result or not.

The attention that will be brought to Thailand may not be as positive as some people would like.

How does this election compare to the previous ones?  Guessing rather poorly.  Don said weeks ago rebuking the need for observers because Thailand had a history well ordered elections, though some still contradict Don and VOA saying  vote buying took place.  Now you have a government election body that cannot seem to count votes and it spends its time hassling one particular party.   Junta mania  just keeps ruining Thailand one day at a time.

I am tipping the Thais get more election news than you. Do you ever look at the television. Numerous channels constantly reporting and discussing the election news. Look at the newspapers, constant coverage. It is all over Facebook as well. Thais all talking about it.

Do you follow that? Can you understand Thai?
