Thousands attended Wat Thamai in Samut Sakhon on Wednesday to eat seven tonnes of durian that the temple had prepared as free treats for workers on Labour Day.

A 3km traffic jam formed outside the temple, while a ceremony was organised at 9am to make merit for His Majesty the late King Rama IX and for His Majesty the King.

Following the ceremony, hundreds of durian-peeling and serving volunteers handed out the pungent fruit and other snacks to visitors, some of whom arrived as early as 5am.

The seven tonnes of durian came from Rayong and Chanthaburi orchards as well as having another batch on standby if it proved insufficient.
