brent c
Greetings, I will be making my first time visit to Thailand in about two weeks. I was wondering if those of you with experience can tell me if you got a Visa in your home country before flying to Bangkok ? Or... did you try to secure a visa upon arrival ? I am trying to make sure I have all my items ready to enter Thailand smooth as possible. I appreciate your feedback and past experiences. I know many of you made you maiden voyage most likely years ago. Respectfully Bc
jacko45k
We would need to know what nationality you are. Most countries can obtain a Visa Waiver on arrival, rather that a Visa on Arrival. VOA available to 21 countries. Andorra Bulgaria Bhutan China Cyprus Ethiopia Fiji India Kazakhstan Latvia Lithuania Maldives Malta Mauritius Papua New Guinea Romania San Marino Saudi Arabia Taiwan Ukraine Uzbekistan

ubonjoe
Looking at your previous posts you are from the US which means you could get a 30 day visa exempt entry that can be extended for the 30 days at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht. The problem you could have is boarding your flight to here since the airline can ask to see a flight out of the country within 30 days of arrival if you planned stay is longer than 30 days. It would be best to get a single entry tourist visa that would allow a 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days. You could apply for it in person or by mail at the embassy in Washington DC or one of the official consulates in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. Or in person at one of the honorary consulates.

Puchaiyank
30 day upon entry...can be extended. If coming for retirement or long stay...best to get your 1 year visa from Thai Embassy in Washington DC. Loads of info on Google...
brent c
Thank you Ubonjoe, I hope I have time. I made an appointment for Friday in Dallas Texas at the Thai Consulate. I may be pressed for time though as I was going to fly out of Dallas on the 9th to Las Vegas to play some texas holdem for 5 days before heading to Bangkok. I am not sure I can get the Visa in the 5 business days.

Normal is next day service at the honorary consulates and at some the same day. You will have your visa before you leave.

Some sites use names that sound official but are not and even some Thai Embassy websites haven't been updated in years or have been poorly translated from Thai to English. yes there is good information available, but for someone traveling to Thailand for the first time it would be difficult to sort out the useful from the incorrect information. i suspect he referred to a "visa on arrival "from a Google search although a VOA is not available to US nationals.
connda
Get a multiple entry tourist visa good for up to 6 months. It's way less of a hassle. Then before you get here read this or just search for "Scams Thailand":https://travelscams.org/asia/common-tourist-scams-thailand/ And go to a bookstore, buy, and read this then you'll have a fighting chance to understand the culture here:https://thailandfever.com/ Other advise: Use sunscreen. Wear condoms. Have fun!

Even though many seem a little disgruntled on Thailand these days....it intrigues me. Asia is a continent I have yet to visit. I look forward to experiencing the culture. I have been lurking in the thaivisa.com shadows for months. Taking in the youtubers, reading about Thailand and I am intrigued by the possibility of taking it all in. I certainly have noticed the attractiveness of the ladies. Life can be an adventure if you let it happen.
Farmer1956
Depends on how long you are planning to stay, if less than 30 days you can enter without a visa, just complete the arrival card (TM 60) issued on the plane. For convenience take a blue or black ink pen. If over 30 days you will need a visa to suit your circumstances.

Essecola
That person who said don't trust anyone is spot on. Keep that point in your mind, and especially that another expat is more likely to do you wrong than a local Thai. If you are American, I would be extremely wary of any British people you meet. Apologies in advance for that comment.

brent c
Well, Bangkok was interesting. The heat is like a Texas summer day. A couple of the places I went were in a top 10 list and thus completely overrun by Chinese. Especially the night train market Ratchada. That sent me to the much more peaceful Sukhumvit Soi 11. great little place called the Apoteka had some nice live music. Now, a little place called Bueng Kan and the people could not be more friendly. PS: Poker in Las Vegas went just fine lol and my trust levels are about the same as when someone is bragging on their nut flush with a rainbow on the board.
