Macron's party falls behind Le Pen's far right in EU election poll

PARIS (Reuters) - The party of far-right leader Marine Le Pen will top the upcoming European Parliament elections with 22 percent of the vote, just ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's REM party, an Ipsos poll released on Sunday.

It was the first time Le Pen's Rassemblement National (RN) - formerly the National Front - overtook Macron's REM in an Ipsos survey ahead of the EU election this year, although other, daily polls have shown the RN in pole position before.

EU elections will be held on May 26 in France.

The poll of 1,500 people was conducted on May 2-3, after Macron announced a series of proposals, including tax cuts worth 5 billion euros ($5.6 billion), in a bid to appease the "yellow vests" anti-government protest movement.

Macron's REM party would obtain 21.5 percent of the vote, the Ipsos poll for France Television and Radio France showed. On April 18-22, 23 percent of the people polled said they would vote for REM, against 22 percent for RN.

Macron is facing the biggest challenge of his presidency yet in the "yellow vest" protests, which started nearly six months ago over the high cost of living but spread into a broader movement against the former investment banker's pro-business reform drive.

Dissatisfaction over slow economic growth, security threats posed by Islamist militants and a backlash against migration across open EU borders have boosted support for nationalists in many member states.

The RN and other eurosceptic anti-immigration parties in other EU states are planning to join forces after the EU parliamentary election.

When it comes to "Le Crunch" the French electorate won't do anything stupid of knee-jerky!

Wait until the election results rather than presume the polls will be replicated.

There's no other leader more deserving of having his nose rubbed in it than the little Napoleon! But somehow ex-bankers like current bankers always come up smelling of roses!

Banks and mainstream media have close connections.  Why do you rarely or never see bankers on the list of richest people?

....you call that ...'a choice'....???

...the stark reality.....

...no choice....

...so much for 'democracy'......

She's not "far right", she's just right. Best news I've read today.

Excellent ! Just hope it's accurate.

Amazing TV posters, who seem to rejoice at the prospect of WW 3.

It's been said, time and time again, that Juncker the Junta has been the problem in the EU. Looks like the tide is finally turning, Brexit has led the way, but corrupt politicians are still blocking the way. Now't wrong with a common market, but a Federal Europe, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER.

Not sure by what standard le Pen is far right. Her party is pro free choice on abortion, anti death penalty, anti privatization of social services, and wants to phase out nuclear power

It's only a poll.

Polls said that Hillary Clinton would be POTUS.

They also said the UK would vote to remain in the EU.

Polls can encourage over confidence, resignation or apathy when it comes to an actual election.

Look up the current definition of Far Right - includes anti migration and globalism, which le Pen advocates. However, le Pen is of course presenting a less toxic image in order to try and gain access to power.

I guess, for the right wingers, life has simply become too complicated to manage by themselves. They are tired to make decisions and wish to have an authoritarian regime guarding them and making decisions for them.

They are also angry for they can no longer compete with the working age younger people, who excel ever changing world. They feel useless and left behind.

That is one reason why the right wingers "wish the good old times back" - meaning the times, when they were young and powerful.

absolutely ridiculous assumptions... right wing is generally little or no government it is the left that are the advocates of more active or big government if you wish to put this in the proper context....

Power would be concentrated within an "elite". Will takes lots of governing to enforce whatever they come up with & suppress opposition

Most young people I encounter in Europe/UK are sinking in a sea of zero hour contracts, education debt, no house, no pension and no hope.

They are also seeing their friends and parents lose their jobs to the hordes of EU migrant workers and EU passport holders who are taking their jobs at wages many of us refuse to work for.

Ridiculous ! nobody speaks of leaving EU in France ; even stupid Le Pen doesn't speak of leaving euro and going back to franc

you don't know Le Pen and RN , I agree for her immigration politics but for the rest, especially economics, she is dumb, doesn't like EU but likes it's money ; I wonder why she is not yet in trial ; I'll go and vote for Macron
