"How adorable!" as friends go back to school - but only a few Thais mention safety

Thai Rath reported on pictures on the Facebook page of Sirichai Singtong that showed two students on a motorcycle pulling three of their friends behind them on a makeshift trailer. 

 

None of the people on the contraption or bike itself were wearing helmets as they went back to school for the first day of the Thai term. 

 

Thai Rath gushed: "Thais never desert their friends!" and said they were "lovely pictures" taken in Ban Saphan Dome.

They said that the pictures inspired 10,000 views and shares in a very short time.

 

Most netizens said how "naa rak" (adorable) it all was. 

 

Only a few mentioned it might not be safe, especially if the trailer became detached or turned over.

I'll keep saying this and whilst Thais continue to believe the hocus pocus spewed out to them by Thai Buddhist monks, they consider that they will be protected from almost anything so hence their own safety is an irrelevant issue.  But these were only children so it is their parents mainly to blame for the stupidity of this dogma and hence it is the parents who should be blamed when an accident happens.  But you know Thais, their fault for lack of safety awareness and training ? not on on your life.

Yeah, and I'll continue to say that in addition to geoffbezoz post above, nothing will change until if miraculously  one day, the education system encourages kids to think for themselves.

Teaching the kids about road safety would also be good at school, as it's obviously beyond their parents' capability.

 

Going back to hocus pocus: as soon as the new solar-powered amulet is available, they can throw away the old technology battery-powered ones.

Too right but the solar powered ones will require a bigger donation to the monks dope peddling or fag fund

In that case, if the donation has been paid, just get the dope to peddle faster and harder on the bicycle, to power the amulet.

And that sums up why there is such an obscene casualty rate on the roads here .. Alongside the very obvious lack of crash hats not worn by them can those gushing not see the " trailer " has no brakes so will just continue on if the bike has to pull up sharply and if that has to happen the two on the bike will cop severe injuries from the bar that the pillion passenger is grasping .. 

If none of this is obvious to netizens coo'ing " lovely pictures " then these people need to step away from motorised transport and return to the trusty Buffalo .. 

If I see things like that it makes me think that parents are happy to be alone again!

No doubt we'd see a surge in 'hoof failure', 'my buffalo's gone blind officer' or 'fell asleep on the cart'.

too poor to afford a car, too poor to have but one old motorbike and the kids have to get the school.  The government won't or don't provide transport, so what do poor village families do?  Get off your western high horses folks.  Yes it's  bad and dangerous  but what is the alternative?  How did you get to your western school, walk (too far and too hot for these kids) Mummy take you in the posh car? Push bike, as dangerous as this arrangement. Too many people on TV are too quick to condemn without considering what alternatives the many poor families have.

The thai people are essentially good people the problem lies higher above the food chain.

Thais have a different tolerance  to child mortality than most other nations:

Rubbish.  It's as much an economic problem  as one of parental care. Yes, they are not the most safety aware parents in the world, but being poor is the biggest hurdle.

Thanks, at least one person is talking commonsense in this post. The others are so happy dissing Thais that forget what real life is like for Thais

The problem is the educational system and societal norms that do not encourage citizens to insist on provision of basic protection for their children such as safe school transport and effective law enforcement.

 

The culture here does not encourage dissent, which is crushed in line with the old Japanese proverb about the sticking up nail being hammered down. 

 

Equally, careless parents who do not protect their children from common dangers are tolerated, not vilified. 

 

Government here does nothing to provide leadership for society, with the result that people are left to fend for themselves, and corruption thrives. A little bit of nanny state would not go amiss, without the ridiculous measures they do take about alcohol consumption (except drink driving) and gambling. 

This is slightly better then 6 people on one motorcycle.

Being stupid and not loving their kids is the biggest hurdle.

Yeah and tend to forget what it was like in their countries a few years back.

 

Thailand has been a "modern" country for 50 years. Cut them a break. Kudos to these kids for seeking an education. Wonder how many American kids died of sickness from walking to school barefoot through the snow years back.
