DPM Prawit: New govt won’t be set up until new premier has been named

BANGKOK, 10 May 2019 (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has submitted a list of 250 senators to His Majesty the King, while Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan has commented that a new government won’t be set up until after a new Prime Minister has been named.

The deputy premier confirmed that the PM has already submitted the list of senators to His Majesty the King for approval, among whom only about 10 have resigned as cabinet ministers. He declined to comment on news reports that more than 60 members of the National Legislative Assembly, including Preecha Chan-o-cha, the Prime Minister’s younger brother, have been named senators.

The deputy premier downplayed news reports that efforts have been taken to set up a coalition government, saying such efforts can not be finalized until after the naming of the new premier.

Many newly-elected MPs have come in to report to parliament, while the Palang Pracharath Party has shown confidence in its ability to set up a coalition government. Over 145 MPs reported to parliament on Friday morning, such as Pharadorn Prisanananthakul of the Bhumjaithai Party for Ang Thong; Action Coalition for Thailand party leader M.R. Chatumongkol Sonakul, and about 100 Pheu Thai MPs.

Meanwhile, Palang Pracharath Party MP Puttipong Punnakan led 11 MPs of his party to Bangkok to report to parliament and said the setting up of a government depends on the preparedness of each party involved. He said some parties could possibly form a third coalition among themselves. However, he said the Palang Pracharath Party could also do so to run the country with stability, though it has only 251 MPs, just over half the total of 500 MPs. It remains to be seen if the Democrat Party will join a Palang Pracharath-led coalition, pending the naming of a new Democrat party leader on May 15, he said.

A "new" premier? As in a different one? I don't think so. Prayut has gone to too much effort to rig everything to stay in power, to allow a new premier. It will be the old one, who took power illegall

c'mon his mother thinks he's cute...

So what happens if after Prayut is named PM, the anti-junta factions manage to muster enough MPs to form a coalition? That could be fun.

Not that that would ever be allowed to happen!

How can the 'good' people say they recognize people's suspicions and unhappiness about the election and say that they have listened?

Replace Prayuth, make him important in the Senate, and put another place man in as PM and let people comment and write while they wait to see the difference (none!)

We predicted they would cheat, but at this scale, and this obvious, no, even that I never considered as a possibility. PPP or whatever they are called, are even after cheating not the biggest party. So they have no bloody right to start forming a coalition, that right is reserved for the biggest party, which remains PPT, even if they only contested in 200 of 350 constituencies, grabbing a whopping 136 seats (actually 137). The Thai people have spoken, but they won't get the government they choose, now fully "legal".

Everyone know what a bloody sham those elections were, the only right thing to do is nullify the elections and jail the people that made such a mess, democracy my ass...

There is someone else who is favoured by higher powers and that could be the wild card in the making .

there is a good reason why uncle Prayut was sitted right in the back during recent ceremonies

The sham continues.

While there've been some names floated for an outsider (elderly puppets) PM, does anyone think that the current "PM" won't put forth himself?

Of course not. With Prawits recently announced drugs war, I would not be surprised that anyone threatening that would be pulled in, drugs planted and hey presto. Thailand has a long reputation for setting people up in order to get them removed or worse.

Does this new coalition have guns?

They would need to watch their backs, literally, because the PMs backers do have.

Its a shame. If the other parties had their wits about them!!!!! Join forces and form a coalition. Disperse the bullshit of the nominated senate and then hold new, transparent elections. Bye bye army...... If only????????????

contradiction here...the first line says Prime Minister and his name but the last line says NEW Prime Minister has been named, so what is it

Yes, Baboon (above).

And don't forget that they still have their trump card to play, to be played for maximum and lengthiest effect: a Very Sad occasion ....

Good observation. There are good reasons for need of an amicable solution to this junta created mess and the highly unpopular and incompetent Prayut to begin his new reign. His intervention will go well with the general public and most importantly bring some stability back to the economy.

If Prayut becomes PM through the House, it means the pro-junta coalition has the majority of MP seats.

That doesn't prevent anti-junta factions from creating a minority opposition coalition through their respective MP's.

If the opposition is close in seats to the majority, it can present a real challenge to the pro-junta coalition on legislation and constitutional amendments. But if not, the opposition becomes a 'straw man' being little more than placards in the NLA.

In essence with Prayut as the 'new' PM, there is no more legislative check and balance to the executive branch as there is prior to the election.

If the pro-junta Senate and House majority agree to grant PM Prayut some kind of limited Article 44 type of power, who's to say no? The nation is right back to where it was after the May 2014 coup.

Purely based on some well grounded rumor and my personal favourite Bath sudden appreciation. ????

A side benefit of keeping the current dictator in place is getting the Toad for another four years. How much more fortunate can you get?

Democracy is when 2 wolves and a sheep discuss what is for lunch.

George Orwell spent 5 years in Burma - he must have seen the writing on the wall then for his book 1984.

The whole of S.E. Asia and China is populated by sheeple. A class system with a structure that weternerns will never fathom or come close to understanding. So nothing will change unlike what has happened in the West....see link from 1960's.
