Retirement Visa vs Re Entry Permit

Featured Replies

Thank you in advance for answering my question.

I have returned to Thailand on a  one year multiple entry retirement extension of stay which will expire on June 15, 2019.

I went to immigration and purchased and obtained only a multiple entry permit good for one year, expiring in May, 2020.

Immigration said that I have thus automatically renewed my retirement extension of stay for another year, into 2020.

Is this information correct or have I misunderstood the information I was given.  Again, thank you for taking my question.

Your post is extremely confusing. Thinking about the various possibilities, I think the most likely explanation is the following (please confirm)

You originally applied for, and received, a Non O-A (long stay) visa from the embassy in your home country that was issued on June 16, 2018, and will expire on June 15, 2019.

You entered Thailand using the visa during the last few days, and as expected received a one-year permission to stay expiring in May 2020.

You visited immigration (probably erroneously believing you needed an extension of your permission to stay) and were instead issued by immigration with a multiple re-entry permit which keeps your permission to stay from your entry using the visa intact should you leave Thailand and return to Thailand after June 15, 2019. If you leave Thailand again and return prior to June 15, 2019 you would have a choice between using the re-entry permit to stay until May 2020, or entering on your visa getting a fresh one-year permission to stay (meaning you are admitted for a full year, but would need a new re-entry permit to protect the new permission to stay if you make additional overseas trips).

I think you are likely confused (not unusual) between

  • what a Thai visa is, and the meaning of its expiry date;
  • what a permission to stay is, and the permitted to stay until date;
  • when an extension of your permission to stay is necessary; and
  • the function of a re-entry permit.

I assume you entered Thailand in May using a Non ‘O-A’ visa and were given permission to stay for 1 year.

Now you have got a multiple entry Re-entry permit from immigration that will enable you to come and go as you please until May 2020.

If the above is correct then then although you’re understanding is wrong, the end result is the same; being that you have permission to stay until May 2020.

I have returned to Thailand on a  one year multiple entry ''O A VISA'' which will expire on June 15, 2019.
