Can You Identify This Bird?

Nocturnal bird ca.25cm, mottled black/brown with white throat. Flies fleetingly exactly like a bat. Cries "Choop, choop, choop..." incessantly all night. Location: I live on the edge of a hill forest (Mae Wong National Park). I've checked my copy of "A Photographic Guide to Birds of Thailand" but cannot find anything like it. The 'chooping' lasts ALL night for LONG periods at a time (right outside my bedroom!)...and is VERY loud. I assume it is a mating call - there are usually two in the area. Anyone any idea of the name (Thai and/or English)?

It's an Owl

Probably an Asian Barred Owlet

very common and highly vociferous both day and night....

Nope. I just Googled your suggestion for a photo. My bird is not remotely owl-shaped. It is...how can I describe it?...regular shaped, like a starling (only bigger than a starling). It has a very distinct white bar on its throat. We have a resident Barn Owl here but this bird really does fly like a bat (of which I have a couple roosting in my house!). Any other ideas? I appreciate your quick response BTW - thanks.

OK

if it's not Owl "shaped" but nocturnal then it's almost certainly a Nightjar

Thailand has 6 species, all have a white throat bar:

Great-eared

Grey

Large-tailed

Indian

Savanna

Malaysian (doubt it's this)

Yes! I believe it is the Large-tailed Nightjar. I Googled your suggestions and found this closest to my sightings: http://www.orientalbirdimages.org/search.p...&pagesize=1

Thanks.
