Durian growers ask Commerce Ministry to find new export markets

Durian growers in the eastern province of Chanthaburi, Thailand’s largest source of the “king of Thai fruit”, have asked the Ministry of Commerce to seek new export markets for durian, besides China, fearing that there may be a glut of the fruit in the next few years.

Durian production this year was estimated at about 860,000 tonnes, a huge increase of about 25% over last year.

Mangosteen, another favorite Thai fruit, also saw an almost three-fold increase of from last year’s 50,000-80,000 tonnes to this year’s estimated 150,000 tonnes.

Unregulated production... and they do it over and over again... just new products... chicken, egg, rice, rubber, pineapple, pork and the list goes on... An next will be "Corn producers, asks the government to step in and guarantee the price on corn"...

for durian i don't see oversupply as a problem. Usually it's gone in 30 seconds, many times i've been with Chinese friends that basically inhale it when they see it.

many countries subsidize farmers otherwise numerous farms wouldn't survive, in 2005 the U.S. paid it's farmers 20 billion dollars to keep them afloat..

Correction, the US paid Corporate Entities that bought-out (pennies on the dollar) all the mom & pop farmers, thus increasing the bottom line of their share holders.

Why ??? Tourists in Thailand (plus locals) can't even buy a large durian or mangosteen anymore since all the big ones go to china these days.

The munber of trees planted in SEA is huge and will cause oversupply within 5 years. If the Chinese economy has a downturn it will have a massive impact.

For peeled durian?

I see it for 120-130 a kg unpeeled.

I can imagine the sales pitch.  Get the Nestle marketers in and invite them to smell the stinking stuff and turn it around to a positive.  Good luck with that.

Don't know, no interest in it but I did notice many prod the peeled stuff and turn their noses up at it, most want it chopped up before they buy. Mrs loves it but refuses to pay these prices. Couple of years ago it was about 60 baht a kilo.

The library of an Australian university was evacuated last week because of a suspected gas leak which turned out to be something much different.

I am unable to understand the difference between durian priced at 130 baht a kilo, and that priced at 400 baht a kilo. Unless the 400 baht/kilo stuff smells worse.

In siam paragon i saw monhthong gold for 3000 a kg...it's the same but from a nice big one.

I have had it 3 times in the last week and 6 times in the last 2 weeks. We live the stuff but it all doesn't  taste the same

Got some last week 90 baht a Kilo. Gorgeous, almondy custard taste, nice texture, delicious. Went back today and it's now the same price as yours. How can the price of fruit fluctuate so much? I'm sure these fruit sellers are scamming the public.

Yeah maybe the farmer who tried to raffle of his daughter

Might have better lick finding new export markets for Mangosteen than Durian which have perhaps a less broad appeal.

Where, in which province ?

In my province, Sakon Nakhon where I'm living since 14 years , it has always been between 100 and 120 baht the unpealed kg

Bangkok Market (Talad Thai) Mon Thong (unpealed)
2010: THB 35/kg
2014: THB 55/kg
2016: THB 95/kg
2019: THB 120/kg

If they have produced so much of it this year, why has the price in Udon nearly doubled? In the supermarkets it is around 220 baht a pack - which is less than half a kilo. Not much cheaper on the street. Last year it was around 80-100 baht.

As for mangosteen, hardly seen any this year.
