Trump tells aides he does not want U.S. war with Iran

One way to prove that you don't want to go to war with Iran could be to pull the aircraft carrier and its escorting ships out of the Gulf and put them somewhere else, send the B52s back to the USA and don't send 120,000 US troops to the Gulf.

It would mean a loss of face for Bolton but for Trump it would mean a gain of face.

And in the same way, if Iran was into demonstrating it's own intentions of avoiding a conflagration it could tone down the rhetoric, scale down maneuvers in the Gulf and it's extra-curricular regional activities. Or it could even agree (nominally or otherwise) to conduct renewed negotiations. Even a phone call between two leaders may contribute to lowering tensions some. But hey - that would entail loss of face for some, and gain for others.

Edit - the 120,000 troops thing is getting milked hard....

Rightly or wrongly , the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan had the strong military support of the UK and NATO .

I very much doubt that would be forthcoming this time, Trump would carry the can alone with nobody to blame when things turned ugly. He hasn't got the balls for that !
