Hardware fault - any clues?

My Dell laptop suddenly died. 

 

Now when I plug in the power, it turns it off, the light on the end of the charger cable goes off, and I have to unplug it to get the power back and the light back on.


Tried two chargers, same result.

Tried removing the battery.

 

Very odd.


I do like my old laptop, any clues on how to fix this?

How old is the laptop?

 

The fault will almost certainly be caused by a malfunctioning component in the charging circuit on the motherboard, it certainly can be fixed, but finding someone competent enough to troubleshoot and microsolder the board in Thailand will be tough, if not impossible. If I was you, I would just remove the hard drive, get a new laptop and transfer the data across.

@toast1 Hi, you say the light comes back on, does the computer come back on or anything happen like noises or clicks?

If it's a motherboard fault it's probably better to buy a new computer. Unless it's a faulty diode near the mainboard power supply it would be difficult to fault find, then if you find the fault, difficult to find the new part.

Not sure where you live, but if in Bangkok or Pattaya you would have a chance of finding someone who could look at it at Baan Mor (canals at back of China Town or bottom of Pantip Plaza, if these places are still there).

What about ask Dell for a quote?

Some shops are pretty good with repairs like that.

I suggest he should go to one of those big computer places (i.e. Fortune) and go to a "normal" shop, not to one of the small repair shops. And then ask in that "normal shop" who is a notebook repair specialist.

Often the guys who work in these shops know each other and they know who is good. So likely they will send him to a shop which they know has someone competent working there.

If you don't know anybody and you go directly to one of those shops who look like they might be able to help you it's unlikely that they will send you to another shop if they think they might be able to do it themselves. Even if they know exactly that maybe the shop next door has the specialists...

 

If the fault is easy to fix or not is obviously a different questions. Sometimes the power supply parts are not on the mainboard and can be easily replaced or maybe even repaired.
