My Mother Wants To Learn About Buddhism

Featured Replies

My 81 year old mother will be coming to stay with me for a month in April. She expressed an interest in learning more about Buddhism, maybe some lectures or something. Or maybe interesting temples or ceremonies to visit with a knowledgeable in Buddhism guide? Does anyone have suggestions of activities or classes or something that she might find interesting? Need to be in English. Extra points if it’s air conditioned and comfortable. She gets around OK but still she is old and I know the heat will be an issue. Anywhere in greater Bangkok or outskirts is OK, my gf can drive her wherever she wants to go.

Thanks for help or suggestions,

In the first instance take her to Section 5, Wat Mahatat, Thanon Maharat - it is a meditation centre and they have timetabled regular talks too. The temple is between Tha Chang and Tha Phra Chan and the entrance to Section 5 is off Thanon Maharat near the river.

Secondly, go to Wat Benchamabopit and ask the monks to take you to Phra Farang. (Western monk) His Buddhist name is Dhamanando and English name is Robert, he's a good teacher and has been a monk for a very long time.

Hello!

I am wondering from where your mother is coming? There are many English language Dharma centers in most industrialized countries. They are very comfortable and hapy to cater to those with special needs.

I first studied Buddhism in the U.K. where there are several good centres, and then in the U.S. where there are even more. Check out either www.kadampa.org or www.fpmt.org . I can recommend any of their centres for good teachings in tranquil surroundings.

For my mother, this is how i would do it.

What a wonderful opportunity. To be exposed to the teachings of Lord Buddha even at this late stage of life.

This is good karma unfolding in a "better late than never" fashion in her life.

And also very fortunate for you to be the one to facilitate this for your mom.

Your very lucky.

Good Health,

Pepe'

I would take her to Ashramata meditation centre in Pakthongchai. It is run by nuns and she will probably feel more comfortable with women. Furthermore it is in the forest (although badly burned a few weeks ago) and therefore cooler. Mind you, she will come in APRIL!!!! :o
