Featured Replies

What is the normal rate to ride tuk-tuk? I had never heard rates less than 300THB for rides within downtown Bangkok.

He's only crying because he was caught, and it's the best face-saving option for him. He had enough cash to run away to Roi-Et.   I only hope the DLT carry their threat to fine him 9,00

If you need more money, work harder and longer. That really is no justification for ripping people off. Glad to see he is getting hammered for it. Hope the same thing continues for the rest of them wh

Who damage the image of Thailand, is NOT the low class people. In the contrary, these People are the real Thais.

Depends on how far you want to go, where you take it, how good you can negotiate and how good your Thai is ????

Expect to pay 2-3 times of what you would pay for a motorbike taxi.

Speak a little Issan and have a bit of a joke about the price can usually get you a break.

and to compensate for these publicity stunts,,,, yesterday another driver brought back 360,000 baht to a Swiss guy.... it's all up side down, their stunts making no sense whatsoever

Well, as long as he cheated because he needed the money . . .  It would have been inexcusable had he not needed the money.

During my time in the land of smiles, I've come to the conclusion that all of my 'learning lessons', (scams or whatever you want to call them) are hasip hasip.....half come from the locals and the other half have come from 'us' truly worthy and trusting farangs.  It appears to me that WE have taught them well.....and then opine when they do what we taught them.

Here's a consolation folks:

Got caught up in the jewelry scam in BK in 2010.

Realised what was going on part way round and did a runner (speed march actually).

Tuk-tuk driver never even got the "special tour 30baht" that he had expected to get, from me, after the scam was completed.

Just one more sham in the Land of Scams.

I wish someone would turn in the IO at the airport that was reported on here the other day.

The set up is bad cop/good cop...or bad IO, good IO. First female IO gives the guy a hard time about entries in to Thailand, then speaks to her compadre, bottom line...heres my phone number, next time Line me, pay me, and we will escort you right thru. Corruption at its best. But people don't report as it is Thailand, and it just goes on and on.

DLT official said he would face charges of having a suppressed licence plate, an out of date driving licence and overcharging.

No mention of insurance cover?

might as well go the whole hog!

Well done to the police, yet again...

Sorry I got caught... Until next time...

Surely he will not be sorry that long. I suspect 30 seconds or less and immediately before he rationalizes it as someone else's fault and forgets the entire incidence immediately or until he has to fork up said fines, which is probably never.

Lucky they had a guide with a conscience. Tip of the iceberg, how many 000's get ripped off every day without it making the news.

No so Amazing Thailand

RE - Lucky they had a guide with a conscience.

* Most likely the guide became conscious when the tuk-tuk driver wouldn't share …

Rich Americans are ripped off all over the world. One idiot bought london bridge thinking he was buying tower bridge.  These white, wealthy,  entitled girls should have learned from the experience and not ratted out this poor guy. I really dont like this class of tourists.  They make more in an hour than he makes in a day. As for the guide who caused the problem ..I bet he was rewarded financially or in other ways. These gringas were played.

He has apologized for damaging the image of the country.

but  not  for  anything  else

It is pretty normal that some locals will try to rip off tourists. Not only in Thailand. Some tourists are too naive and should better stay at home or only use group tours.

1500 is approximately 50 usd, when Thai price is more expensive than an American price, something is wrong.

This is typical you really need to close all the loop holes when you negotiate with these guys. Oh sorry I told you 500 baht each or 500 baht each plus motorway or 500 baht plus luggage an additional 100 baht.
