Video: Putting a new spin on brake failure - or was Benz driver just plain drunk?

The driver of a black Mercedes Benz has been quoted as saying that a fallen thermos flask that got wedged under a brake pedal was the reason for carnage on Ngam Wong Wan Road in the Tuesday rush hour.

Four vehicles were damaged, eight people were injured and one person died as the Benz went through traffic near Soi 8 outbound on the important Bangkok artery road.

Now dash cam footage has emerged on Facebook of one of the vehicles that was damaged.

The Benz tries to get through a narrow gap and hits the back of a pick-up causing it to roll. The Benz races off.

The poster said they didn't believe a flask had got stuck under the brake pedal.

They said the brake light came on and ridiculed the whole excuse.

They suggested that the driver of the Benz was just plain drunk.

More than one and a half million people viewed the footage that was posted on a Thai page that translates as "Marky kills the bear with his bare hands".

An automatic with an e-brake: there's no real way of slowing it without hitting the brakes.  The handbrake, now called a parking brake is a switch which can only be engaged when stationary.

Gee I  wonder if they had baby seats it would have helped at all???

Mercs  Brake  lights  came  on briefly, doesn't a car like this have aeb?

Just to be clear, brake lights will come on even with a slight pedal depression. So having something blocking the pedal from being depressed all the way down and the brake light coming on is possible.

If they had, the driver should have been sitting in one.

I wonder how far that no good bastard got down the road with the hood crumpled and blocking his view?

It's missing the most important thing...the brake pedal.

Thai men cannot be trusted.

This story is seriously lacking details (or maybe it's past my bed time).

The pick up and the Benz were damaged. What other 2 vehicles?

Who died?

Was the baby hurt?

What 8 people were injured?

Watched the video numerous times. Was there a passenger?

Where was the baby sitting? On the drivers lap?

Don't buy the "brake failure" bit.  More likely "Brain Failure" was the cause.

Most Thai's should be limited to operating one of this for 80 years

hope the baby is alright

The speed he was going,I would say his foot firmly on the accelerator,

the Thermos under the brake is B/S, he had the handbrake and could

have used gears to slow down.but sped away.

Brake failure in this case is obviously total rubbish. In other reports it is mentioned that the police searched for the flask which the Merc driver claimed got caught under the brake pedal - it was never found.

Did the Merc driver get tested for alcohol and drugs ????

I suspect he was drunk... Occam's razor.

He appears to accelerate after the incident, the brake lights only appear on impact and then are off again as he blasts away. He was travelling much faster than the other cars too.

Thermos didn't cause all that to happen. More like cocaine or yaba

Billy Liar seems to be behind the wheel of every car in Thailand !

Perhaps it was 'orange crush' in the thermos.

Water bottles have the same effect...

Uni friend of my wife's, died when a bottle got trapped under her brake pedal !!

He's reacting pretty quick, stepping on the gas to get away. Ridiculous, with so many cameras out there.

I see this kind of "slalom" everyday here in Bangkok, just inches from crashing into other cars. Quite frankly, it's a miracle there aren't even more accidents.

Drunk, drugged, on the phone, distracted or just plain careless?

A Benz driver so possible also self entitled. What was a poor pick up doing in his way??

I doubt much will happen to a Benz driver. Few baht to the pick up driver etc.

But definately nothing stuck under the accelerator pedal.

Benz drivers are blameless.  That's why he drove off.  The hell with the little people.  Laws?  Laws don't apply to the rich and wealthy.

Blood money will be paid - all will be well.  No criminal charges needed.  This is the Land of Untouchable Socialites (LOS).  Money talks; Justice walks.

I have yet to see someone say “I was wrong, I made a mistake, sorry”

Always blaming something else. I presume to get out of the monetary side.

Nevertheless it still depresses you never reading the right thing said.
