Govt backs its IUU measures

BANGKOK, 4 June 2019 (NNT) - The government has assured the people, that IUU measures have been properly instigated and advised at least one political party to thoroughly check out accurate information pertaining to the issue.

Deputy government spokesman Lt. Gen. Verachon Sukhonthapatiphak dismissed Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit’s allegations made earlier at Mahachai Mankhong market in Samut Sakhon province, that the government’s policy on the IUU issue had been wrongly enforced, rendering losses to fishermen.

The deputy government spokesman said most of the fishermen who had given such information to Mr. Thanathorn had broken the law. Some had been penalized at court hearings with over 500 million baht in fines, and others had had their boats confiscated for having breached the law pertaining to human trafficking in international waters.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was quoted as saying if the government had failed to seriously tackle the IUU issue, Thailand’s fishing sector would have encountered an enormous crisis. Last year, Thailand caught up to 200,000 tons of fish, some 15,000 tons of which was caught by local small operators. Meanwhile, commercial trawlers are given over 100 days to fish. The number of aquatic creatures in rich fishing grounds has begun to rise without the intrusion of illegal fishing boats.

I don't believe this is correct with regard to wrongly enforced.

Case in point is that the EU lifted its “yellow card” from Thailand for its enforcement actions against illegal fishing. In order for Thailand to have all the necessary policies in place to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, it has:

  • amended its fisheries legal framework in line with international law of the sea instruments.
  • reinforced compliance with its obligations as a flag, port, coastal and market State, included clear definitions in its legislation and set up a deterrent regime of sanctions.
  • reinforced the mechanisms of control of the national fishing fleet and enhanced its monitoring, control and surveillance systems. http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-19-61_en.htm

In those instances where fishing vessels went idle due to a decrease in number of authorized sailings, Prayut provided compensation.

  • Thanks 1
