Prayut gets royal endorsement as prime minister

General Prayut Chan-o-cha was royally endorsed for his second term as prime minister in a ceremony at Government House on Tuesday afternoon. 

 

The endorsement came six days after Prayut, as a Phalang Pracharat Party candidate, was voted in as PM at Parliament.

 

The Royal Command was delivered by the House of Representatives’ secretary-general Sorasak Pienwet. 

 

Prayut is Thailand’s 29th premier. 

 

After receiving his endorsement, Prayut expressed his gratitude to His Majesty and promised to maintain high ethical standards. He also thanked the Parliament and the public for support. 

 

Also present at the event were Prayut’s wife, Naraporn, and leaders of the coalition parties led by Phalang Pracharat leader Uttama Savanayana.

Thai coup leader completes transition to elected PM, cabinet unclear

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's king formally endorsed former army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha as an elected prime minister on Tuesday, five years after he seized power in a military coup, though the makeup of his coalition government's cabinet is unclear.

 

Prayuth's unwieldy coalition will face fierce opposition from the Democratic Front of seven parties that says the military junta's electoral rules ensured a victory for pro-army forces and whose members have been subjected to what they denounce as legal harassment.

 

Thailand held a bitterly fought general election in March, and the new parliament last week voted for Prayuth as prime minister, thanks to the votes of the upper house, the Senate, which was entirely appointed by the military junta Prayuth had led since 2104.

 

In the 500-member elected lower House of Representatives, his 19-party coalition holds only a slim majority and media has been rife with reports of wrangling over cabinet positions.

 

Prayuth earlier on Tuesday expressed optimism.

 

"The policy ideas proposed by parties are all beneficial to the people. So the government that comes from the election and through the joining of members of parliament must be a government of all Thais," he said 

 

"I hope things will be sorted out as soon as possible.”

 

During the swearing-in, Prayuth bowed to a portrait of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The monarch, who was formally crowned in ornate rites last month, did not attend the ceremony.

 

"I will promote a peaceful environment for a unified society based on love, unity and compassion ... and I will safeguard the dignity of the institutions of state, religion and the monarchy, which are deeply cherished by the people of Thailand," Prayuth said.

 

The junta leader had campaigned on a promise of bringing an end to confrontation between opponents and supporters of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose loyalists lead the Pheu Thai Party that heads the Democratic Front.

 

Prayuth's party members have in some cases accused rivals of insufficient loyalty to the monarchy, and the leader of the opposition Future Forward Party - also part of the Democratic Front - faces police charges of sedition and cyber crime.

Prayut vows to keep Thais happy, unified and prosperous

 

 

In his speech, responding to His Majesty the King’s royal command formally appointing him as prime minister at the Government’s House today (June 11), General Prayut Chan-o-cha promised to perform with honesty and integrity to make Thailand prosperous and keep Thais happy and healthy.

 

The Prime Minister said that he will listen to the voices of the people and dedicate his government to eradicating corruption, reducing inequality and elevating the welfare of the people.

 

He also expressed his intention to provide opportunities for the younger generation to participate in national development to keep up with the digital era.

Thailand has no hope, just write this wasteland off as a failed experiment. Maybe in another 100 years it might join the civilized societies of the world, for now, we can just shake our heads in disbelief.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has to take an oath of allegiance and declare the government’s policy direction before performing his duties as the new premier, Deputy PM Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Tuesday.

 

It was expected that the retired general, who was elected as premier by Parliament last week, would receive royal endorsement Tuesday afternoon, but the ministers in his first Cabinet have not yet been named due to ongoing horse trading over portfolios.

 

Wissanu, who is a legal expert, said there was no fixed date to form a new government, so the current Cabinet would continue to perform their duties until Prayut and his new Cabinet are sworn in, and the new government’s policy announcement is delivered in Parliament.

 

“There are two steps the PM must take before performing his duties. The first is to take an oath of office, and then to declare the government’s policy direction,” the deputy PM said.

 

“Moreover, the current Cabinet and premier can work until the new [PM and] Cabinet takes these two steps. Also, the National Council for Peace and Order’s power will end eventually [once those steps are taken],” he added.

 

Wissanu said that, with or without a new Cabinet by then, Prayut as premier would be chairman of the 34th Asean Summit, which takes place in Bangkok on June 22-23.
