MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday fired two police generals involved in a discredited criminal case against a journalist, an episode that sparked a mass protest in Moscow the previous day, the Kremlin said.

Russian police abruptly dropped drugs charges on Tuesday against journalist Ivan Golunov, a rare U-turn by the authorities in the face of anger from his supporters who had alleged he was framed for his reporting.

Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said at the time that he planned to ask Putin to dismiss senior police personnel involved in the case.

The Kremlin said on Thursday that Putin had fired two senior police officers, both of whom had the major-general rank.

Were they both fired for allowing the case to become discredited I wonder?

So, I hope everybody that comment about the possibility to re-open the case is going to repeat themselfs? No, I don´t think so.

Can we now agree on that they admitted that it was a setup from start?

did not argue whether it was a set-up or not, just noted that closed investigations can be opened again in case new evidence comes up.
In this case, the "evidence" that was brought forward consisted according to some Russian Newspapers amongst others of photographs of a drugslab that were not taken in Gulanov's place, but elsewhere. Rather unusual.

What is more the formulated full rehabilitation and albeit indirect recognition of wrongdoing by law enforcement authorities seems to be a first.
Moreover, actually, the unwritten rule that Authorities do not give in to pressure and do not accuse their peers was broken, and, imho, rightly so.
Progress ? Let's hope so !
