BANGKOK, 14 June 2019(NNT) - Local authorities have found a group of Rohingya refugees on Ravi island off Satun province. They have been looking for boat refugees on any other islands off the southern province. Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered an investigation into the boat’s arrival and has arranged humanitarian aid.

The premier has ordered police and relevant agencies to find out whether any Thai persons may have been involved in the group’s migration and potential illegal employment of the Rohingya refugees. Public health officials were instructed to provide them with medical checkups and humanitarian aid and to take steps to prevent possible epidemics.

Thailand has closely cooperated with other countries to help Rohingya refugees. Thailand has set up the Center for Humanitarian Assistance for Unusual Migrations in the Indian Ocean. However, members of the public are encouraged to give tip-offs, particularly on the possibility of government personnel being involved in illegal migration activities.

Satun provincial police have set up an investigative group after a Thai national and five Myanmar nationals, allegedly brought the Rohingya refugees to the area, intending to send them on to a third country. The boat laden with over 70 refugees came to shore on Ravi island, which is part of the Tarutao Islands National Park. The authorities have been searching the island for any refugees who might still be hiding.

Arun Umaji, head of the Provincial Islamic Committee, visited the refugees at a shelter provided by Border Patrol Police Company 436, where they will undergo screening and further investigation procedures.
