Driving around the place I saw several black Africans, presumably Nigerians or Ghanaians due to the gems business, but very few Caucasians. Nice place, though. Great seafood, the best fruits and seemingly little pollution. There doesn't seem to be a section on this area of Thailand here - does anyone have any info on this area that would relate to TV? Still trying to decide on moving to Thailand or staying here for another few years. Thankfully the industries we are in can't be buggered about too much by the government . . . . yet! You do not have the lights and glitter of the tourest cities but you do have great air, beach's that are uncrowded and clean, three major department stores and local folks that make you feel wanted. It's in the middle of the rubber industry in the east and that helps as well. We only found Robinson's, as far as shopping centres is concerned . . . There are a few dozen foreigners around, most of them in the gem business. The locals are still friendly since they rarely deal with the embarrassing jetsam and flotsam of the other tourist places. This region also is fairly prosperous, so there are a lot of very nice, tidy villages and towns in Chanthaburi Province, such as Tha Mai, Laem Sing, or Chao Lao beach. Almost no farang around, which is both good and bad and it helps a lot to speak Thai here. I have been all over Thailand and this is one of my favorite regions for sure. I don't even bother locking my house a lot of the time its that safe, which is a very nice feeling. Do appreciate the air and water here, especially after returning from the North a few days ago. (Wow, what nasty air up there!) And the great, cheap seafood. If you have any questions, let me know. I know this area pretty well. Thanks, tiger tanaka - I will certainly take you up on that. neither my wife nor I speak Thai but are learning it slowlyyyyy. We have a business in Loei and have now opened one up in Chantaburi, the scale of which has now reached the stage where we should be there all the time instead of just every two weeks. Lambo? we might be mixing in different circles then . . . I can understand people having those cars here (kind of) the roads are good, but would the thing bottom out at every streetcorner? mumin999 Posted May 6, 2007 Share Posted May 6, 2007 Hi guys, my wife is from Chantaburi originally and a couple of years ago we have been able to buy some land in Silarporn Ville and build our own house. We've been to a lot of the places down south including Pattaya, Rayong, Trat and also some of the islands and have to say that Chantaburi is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the nice peaceful life. You do see the odd farang here and there and its generally a nice feeling as you acknowledge each other in the knowledge that theres not many of you around! Unfortunatey we havent been able to visit this year so our house is currently unoccupied but kept nice and clean by our cousin! If anyone wants to visit and needs a place to stay let me know. srifah Posted May 6, 2007 Share Posted May 6, 2007 A reminiscence of my maternal grandmother, aunts and uncles, nice breeze with cool air on January morning of the town called Tha Mai; the famous beef noodle soup, ga-bok, durian that sweet with a tint of bitter taste which counldn't find anywhere else, and Chantaboon (that's what people called)-- Sriya-nusorn HS.
