Thanathorn accused of protecting fishermen who flout IUU regulations

Future Forward party leader, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, has been criticized for lacking an understanding of the IUU (illegal, unreported, unregulated)  fishing regulations in his attempt to woo owners of commercial fishing vessels affected by the regulations, because of their illegal fishing practices.

Mr. Thanaporn Sriyakul, an advisor to the Thai Fisheries Department, said today that Mr. Thanathorn might have better understood the fishing problem after his visits to the southern provinces of Ranong and Phuket to meet with the fishermen.

However, he admitted he felt betrayed by Thanathorn who, during his visit to the eastern province of Trat to meet with fishermen there, told them that his party would propose that parliament should change articles 34, 69 and 81 of the amended Fisheries Act.

"However, he admitted he felt betrayed by Thanathorn who, during his visit to the eastern province of Trat to meet with fishermen there, told them that his party would propose that parliament should change articles 34, 69 and 81 of the amended Fisheries Act.

{snipped}

Mr. Thanaporn noted that the revocation of article 81 would put the Thai fishing industry back to the old system of illegal and unregulated fishing, which would subject Thai fishery products to bans by EU."

On the one hand Thanathorn of the FFP is quoted as saying 'change', and Thanaporn Sriyakul, (an advisor to the Thai Fisheries Department) is quoted as saying 'revocation'.

I don't if it's the article, or whether one of them is not speaking clearly?

Perhaps next week we'll have a report of Thanathorn farting, and the government claiming he's contributing to global warming.

The level of garbage they throw his way is a clear indication of how much they see him as a threat to their own dirty game.  What they don't realize is - when they do this most of us see it as a clear indication of their stupidity - and what they think we might believe

Its the press, these articles are deliberatly written and aimed at divisiveness.

90% of the time we are all reacting to opinion rather than journalism.

the powers that be would blame him for 9/11, world hunger and the assassination of JFK if they could

All good examples of their desperation. But I thought bluesofa had a pretty good example too ... "Perhaps next week we'll have a report of Thanathorn farting, and the government claiming he's contributing to global warming"

it has taken years for the thai govt to crack down on all the illegal fishing, removing the work they have done now would be a huge mistake especially if it is just to get votes. Even changing it to please these rogue fishermen is a bad move, they have decimated the thai fish stocks through their greed and want to be able to continue it, the regs need to be left alone so it cannot start to happen once again, hopefully thanathorn is not actually going to allow them to do so just for a few extra votes but we have all seen how low they will go to get votes here, no politician is trustworthy

And the Hits keep on a comin for this Thaksin clone. In a few more months he will be nothing but a distant memory in Thai politics. The Powers That Be are like a bloodhound locked onto a scent and in this case it's removing Pretty Boy from the political scene.

If the Thai electorate has it wrong, then they carry the blame an the consequences. That's the nature of a democratically elected government.

But those "years of govt crackdown" you're referring to are the Prayut-junta government years whom of course operated without any participation nor consent of the Thai electorate.

An elected MP has the right and obligation to represent the electorate to question such laws and regulations made under an Article 44 fiat.

Yep, but do not expect some people to understand the point you are making. People that willingly support illegal coups, have no clue about rule of law and democracy...

You forgot the burning down of the Reichstag in 1933.

https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/the-reichstag-fire

1   Implemented one day after the fire, the decree suspended the right to assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and other constitutional protections, including all restraints on police investigations. It remained in effect until Nazi Germany was defeated in May 1945.

2   The decree permitted the regime to arrest and incarcerate political opponents without specific charge, to dissolve political organizations, and to confiscate private property.

3   The decree also gave the regime the authority to overrule state and local laws and overthrow state and local governments.

Does this sound familiar locally?

it may have been the junta but they at least stopped the decimation that these idiots were doing for profit that other govts refused to do. Doesnt matter who stopped the illegal activity as long as it was stopped or would you rather see them continue to destroy the waters around Thailand purely because of who stopped it, sometimes you have to accept something good was done by the wrong people as in this case, the illegal fishing had to be stopped, nothing to do with the rest of the country, they have their own worries plus the fact the ptp who you & sjaak think are gods gift were in it for themselves not the people & feathering their own nest as well before hand all for their glorious leader. Politics in Thailand no matter who is in is totally wrong, anyone that does something good is a change and good for all the country,

He better not fart in public, could get 5 years for that, in this Democracy.

True, don't mushroom pickers get twenty years? Probably nose-pickers might get six months - per nostril.

There was some merit, arguably, in the points you made in your first post. A case could be made with crediting the junta with taking some action against the unrestricted fishing practices which were doing so much damage.

But then the everpresent (for you) spectre of Thaksin loomed over your argument, and you started frothing at the mouth over those of us who don't see him in the same entirely malevolent light. At that point it all rather came unglued...

More like the flipper will be a distant something....

If pro junta forces think it will further discredit him you can bet it will be published. It seems they see Thanathorn as their biggest threat to continued access to the trough.

Wait a minute old fatty has that accolade all sewn up.

And you actually believe the current lot are not in it for themselves? The way how they grabbed power and try to retain it speaks volumes.
