BANGKOK (NNT) - All coalition parties have now submitted the name lists of would-be cabinet ministers to the Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha. The Palang Pracharath Party reported that there were no negotiations for cabinet seats, as the Prime Minister will have a final say on this issue. The Election Commission (EC) provided an explanation as to why the Democrat Party has more votes following the March 24 general election.

The EC Secretary-General, Pol. Col. Jarungvith Phumma, responded to the Tai Rak Tham Party’s complaint about the number of votes received by the Democrat Party. Pol. Col. Jarungvith said the Democrat Party has more votes because the previous figure did not take the votes from advance voting and overseas voting into account. He said the EC then announced the roster of party-list MPs from the March 24 election, comprising candidates from 26 political parties, and the Democrat Party had 3,957,620 votes.

After a by-election in Constituency 8 of Chiang Mai province on May 26, the number of votes received by the Democrat Party rose to 3,959,358 votes. Pol. Col. Jarungvith insisted that the commission’s formula to calculate party-list MPs for political parties is constitutional.

On the issue of forming a new coalition government, the Democrat Party leader, Jurin Laksanavisit, said his party had submitted its name list of would-be cabinet ministers to the Prime Minister. Mr. Jurin said the Democrat Party had also examined the qualification of one of its nominated members, Sathit Pitutecha. The Democrat leader said the Prime Minister will look into the name list again and expressed his confidence that the issue won’ lead to conflict within the party.

Meanwhile, seven opposition parties had discussed ways to work together within and outside Parliament. The Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, Phumtham Wechayachai, said today the opposition parties will have to cooperate with each other closely to check and balance the power of the government. Mr. Phumtham said they have to effectively communicate with members of the public and encourage them to support the opposition’s work.

The 1,542 advance voting ballots from Thai citizens in New Zealand could not be counted because they arrived too late. https://prachatai.com/english/node/8011
