Clampdown on illegal mackerel fishing vital to protect species, says Fisheries Association

The National Fisheries Association has urged the Thai government to take strong action to protect short-bodied mackerel, which are “near extinction”. The association points to what they say is the illegal use of submerged gill nets along coastal areas during the egg-laying season.

PHUKET: There will be no official memorial service this Friday for the 47 Chinese tourists killed in the Phoenix tour boat disaster a year ago, because no one wants one, the Phuket Governor has announced.

Power outage to hit Cherng Talay

PHUKET: The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) Thalang branch has announced that the electricity supply will be temporarily shut off in parts of Cherng Talay on Wednesday (July 3) as work is carried out on high voltage power cables.

Fourth group of Myanmar refugees return from Thailand

Tip of ‘ice’ berg: 5.4 tonnes of crystal meth seized in first half of year

Indicating the vast scale of Thailand’s drugs trade, the Defence Ministry says that during the first half of this year authorities seized over 200 million methamphetamine pills, more than 5 tonnes of crystal meth and 7 tonnes of marijuana.

Police round up 24 women drinking companions in Bangkok clubs

Police early this week rounded up 24 women from Laos and Vietnam who worked as drinking companions at clubs in Bangkok’s Khlong Ton, Ratchadapisek and Huai Kwang areas for inspection over a suspicion that they might be involved in prostitution, a senior officer said on Tuesday.

Shippers’ Council views year’s Thai exports range as flat to down 1 per cent

The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) on Tuesday revealed Thailand’s export in May reached US$21.017 billion, down 5.8 per cent compared to the same month of 2018. Meanwhile, the export in value of baht reached Bt663.647 billion in May this year, down 4.0 per cent year on year.

More villagers jailed for encroaching park, while groups tell gov’t to recognise land rights

BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - China on Tuesday condemned violent protests in Hong Kong as an “undisguised challenge” to the formula under which the city is ruled, hours after police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters who stormed and trashed the legislature.
