Thailand proposes Kaeng Krachan forest complex as natural world heritage site

Thailand is pushing hard for the Kaeng Krachan forest complex, on the Thai-Myanmar border, to be recognized as a natural world heritage site at the 43rd World Heritage Committee meeting in Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku.

 

Former Thai ambassador to France, and head of the Thai delegation at the World Heritage Committee meeting, Mr. Sihasak Puangkatekaew, said yesterday that the committee had raised concerns about the border demarcation problem between Thailand and Myanmar.

 

He said the Thai delegation had clarified to delegates from several countries, on the sidelines of the World Heritage Committee meeting, that the Thai government had agreed to downsize the territory of the forest complex by about 15% by moving the demarcation line further away from the Thai-Myanmar borderline, to allay concerns that the area of the complex may encroach on Myanmar territory.

great, that area will be legally protected by international treaties. Sadly, thailand did not sign to International Convention against Enforced Disappearance and murders local activists. Billy was murdered in keang krachan in 2014 by park rangers.

So the Committee should make conditions, before accepting.

 

Heritage is more about society and culture, which are being actively eradicated from the park by thai government. They burn forest villages, rice barns and try to move Karen people outside of park, without giving them land to support themselves

Held in "Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku." there having a laugh! Baku was the most polluted place on earth not that many years ago, sure they have cleaned it up some what - they had too, but quite why they are hosting this meeting? they must have a lot of brown envelopes to hand out!
