Three Bangkok communities suffering bad noise pollution

A community in Bangkok’s Din Daeng area has been suffering from the worst noise pollution in the city, and the biggest cause is road traffic, a recent study shows.

Pralong Dumrongthai, director general of the Pollution Control Department, revealed on Friday that the Karnkeha Din Daeng Committee, based in a government housing project, suffers average daily noise levels of 71.6 to 81.6 decibel of A-weighting.

A-weighting is commonly used for the measurement of environmental and industrial noise, as well as when assessing potential hearing damage.

The safe limit is no more than 70 decibels on average in a 24-hour period.

“Noise pollution is a threat to physical and mental health,” Pralong said, adding that prolonged exposure to severe noise pollution can cause temporary or permanent loss of hearing.

His department has been monitoring noise levels across the country and found that the Karnkeha Din Daeng Community suffers the highest level of noise pollution.

The second-most polluted area is near the Thon Buri sub-power station, where average noise levels range between 69.3 and 72.1 decibel A, while the third most polluted is near the Karnkeha Huai Kwang Community, also living in a government housing complex, where noise levels range between 63.1 and 83.4 decibel A.

Pralong said he has alerted relevant authorities about the noise pollution, and believes that if vehicle owners fully comply with laws governing their car’s exhaust pipes and related systems, the noise pollution will reduce.

One good idea would have been planning, (sorry for using a word that explains an alien concept). That means not building all rooms and condos to close to heavy trafficated roads.

What law???   If there is such a law in Thailand, it must be at the top of the most unenforced laws here, and that's certainly a very well-populated competition.

Complaining about noise pollution. What  a joke.  Morons with powerful distorted bass driving around in pick-ups,   children on mopeds with inadequate silencers not to mention the fact that Thai men can not seem to have a conversation with anybody without shouting.   Its everywhere and now they are complaining about the traffic.

First come the buildings, then come the people. Then comes the traffic. Go figure.

Khun Pralong must suffer from some kind of birth defect. Every other Thai seems to be totally immune to noise of any kind. In fact they can't live without it.

There are several things wrong with his assumptions:

first he alerted authorities thinking they will do something

second he believes car owners may comply with the law

third he does not realize that he is in Thailand

No noise pollution. Noise is part of Thai DNA.

Recent polls show, though, that vast numbers of Thai complain about too much noise and are absolutely not okay with it.

Here at our village the noise arrives during the 7am day - 4 pm often at 90 up decibels, the early morning around 4.30 am and in the evening up to around 9 pm it reaches 70-80 decibels.
It looks like a Thai disease!

Ok, so now they stopped building buildings, and only focus on road development. Good to know! Thanks.

I agree they are not happy - But - knowing how mentally unstable their fellow citizens are they believe it is wiser to stay quite & uninjured!

Lethargic population due to the fact they never get a decent nights rest!

Judging by the picture and where these "communities" (if there is such a thing now in such places) are, then what were you expecting in BBK? A serene peaceful and tranquil existence? You are having a giraffe.

What's the problem? Thais like noise

I visited Singapore not long ago and the difference is obvious when coming back to Bangkok. I stay next to Sukhumvit in a relatively quiet neighbourhood but the old buses, trucks and modded bikes are just too damn noisy and loud.

When measuring sound levels doesn't distance come into play? Just sayin......
