However marginal cost inclusive of the lens cost is over 5000 baht.

You are incorrect - many organisations who perform cataract ops regard the cost as less than this. The ops start at as little as $9.00.

Profiteering is of course rampant in Thai and western hospitals

So, is saying that when I get treatment at Bumrungrad, my insurance pays 5 time the price a Thai would pay? Obviously they seem to think that's fair. Just as Love and War...

  • Thais pay the same as foreigners at Bumrungrad. There is no cheap Thai rate. Only very wealthy Thais go there.  Sent from my SM-J701F using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

  • This is the same price my husband paid in an Austrian private hospital last year.  Where is affordable healthcare in Thailand?

The wholesale cost of a standard lens is considerably more than $9. It is in the hundreds of dollars.

If anyplace is citing a cost less than a few hundred dollars they are not including the cost of the lens nor the pro rated cost of the machines. And the medical personnel are either volunteers or working at third world salary rates.
