rooster59 Posted July 20, 2019 Share Posted July 20, 2019 Hua Hin: Cancer sufferer still fighting for justice - so that others won't be conned A Dutch man in a long running saga over a series of medical bills from a hospital in Hua Hin in 2015 - 2016 is still pursuing the case so that other foreigners won't get conned. The health authorities already found in favor of Edwin Buse, now 50, after a hospital in Hua Hin charged him an extra 300 baht (or 15% more) per visit for treatment for colon cancer. The authorities ordered the hospital to return 12,746 baht to Mr Buse, a former train engineer who now tends goats in Klong Wan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan. He said in January that this was still not enough after he made 14 visits and got other treatment. Mr Buse has refused to accept the payout. Yesterday he went to meet with Pol Lt-Col Chaiwiwat Janthorn of the Hua Hin police to make a formal complaint. Mr Buse said that he had been treated for an extra 50 baht a time though he didn't specify what hospital. That was fine. He said that it was not about the money - that can be paid later - it was about the principle of a hospital overcharging a foreigner and doing what they please despite health department regulations. He intends to keep fighting so that others are not forced to pay irregular charges in this manner. I have a small amount of private insurance (coverage around 50000thb). I had an accident and broke my arm. Social security covered everything except a metal plate and private room .. Now here is the fun part.. The surgery was covered by social security. But they maxed my private insurance with it. And then they asked for cash for the metal plate.. after waiting around 12 hours to get this sorted when trying to "check out" from the hospital I just gave up.. And then the next day when I was home I tried to call the insurance company saying the hospital screwed them and me.. Insurance company kept giving me the run-around etc so I gave up.. Lesson learned: don't sign anything u don't understand.. dont tell them u have private insurance until the very very end and then make sure that they put everything on social security first .. Could have gone the normal route of plaster and no plate. Just as effective and 1/10 the price. Surgery and metal plate is a scam, most breaks don't need it, and the plate may cause problems later. My misses just negotiated for an old Dutch guy in Chiang Mai with a broken hip. Suan Dok aka Maharaj wanted a 30k cash deposit before he entered and estimated the total bill at around 300k (metal plates). Being 'overcharged', as he calls, for 12.700THB in 2 years, at 100THB per treatment, is a real very big attack on his financial capacities. He better could stay in Holland where 'everything' is for free. Poor man what even has to rise goats to come to an income for his living. Health insurance is about 3000 - 3800 baht each month for the rest of our lives + we have to pay our own risk insurance money first wich is between 13000 - 31000 baht depending on how much you pay each month, EVERY YEAR. So yeahh the first 55000 baht (at least) is on your own account in the netherlands. And even then not everything is 100% paid for you.. Only thing when it's almost 'free' is when you get money from the government for health insurance if your own income is not that good (between € 0 and € 29.500). This guy is just doing it because of the discrimination (reading he was a train engineer, he probaly has a decent pension), wich is illegal by Thai law btw.. And must not be the first time this kind of 'scams' have happened to him.. At some point (even for me) it's getting more and more annoying. Ohh yeahh, if we live for more then 6 months outside of the Netherlands, the health insurance company will stop helping you. So big chance he doesn't have health insurance anymore if he lives full time in Thailand. I need six eye injections of a VEGF drug called Avastin and the first question the hospital asked is: "Is the patient Thai or foreign?" I generally use the 'express' service, and I pay extra for the service, as do ALL the Thai patients. At times I have used the after hours OPD specialist service, and pay extra for the service, as do ALL Thai patients, including my Thai partner who is a nurse in another governent hospital. After Christmas last year I was admitted as a patient in a private room due to a severe UTI infection requiring IV antiobiotics for 4 days - I paid the same fees as a Thai patient would have. Most of the medical staff at Hua Hin Hospital are excellent - many doctors have thier own private after hours clinics, and several also work part-time in one of the two Hua Hin private hospitals. Hua Hin Hospital provides a great service to the community; the Hospital is also several million Baht in debt, as are many many other Thai government hospitals. Personally, I do not mind paying a few hundred Baht extra per visit to Hua Hin Hospital, as it helps the Hospital continue is great work in our community. At that hospital I got a hernia operation some years ago and paid 12.074 Baht total incl room food etc. 3 months ago I went there again for same operation opposite side and they quoted me 100.000 Bath. Quite a different price for exactly same operation. Went to a local government hospital in Pattaya and was here quoted 50.000 Bath. They only wanted 30.000 paid in advance for the doctor. From April 2018 the government allowed public hospitals up to 50% 'Foreigner Surcharge'. This hospital has obviously chosen the maximum.
