Taking Thai registered car in to cambodia.

After looking all around for info on taking a road trip into Cambodia, I could find nothing up-to date, so I thought I’d share my trip through the border at Chong chom. 

First thing you need is the good old recently permit, ( I got mine at kap Choeng ) on the way down.

passport and blue registration book for the car ( owner of the car must be the driver). There are ways of taking someone else’s car but as I don’t know the details of that I’m not going to comment.

To dispel the myth, the purple book ( car passport ) is for use to enter Loas and is not needed here.

As I used Chong  Chom this only applies here, I have no idea about other border crossings.

The photo is numbered with the various stages to go through, I can’t remember the actual names of each department but the numbering will put you right where you need to be.

So let’s start,

1: Arrive at border crossing and park the car, take with you passport and blue book ( car registration ).

2: This is passport control, TM6 is taken out and passport stamped, you are now in no mans land.

3: Cross the road to number 3, with passport and blue book, a young lady will sign your car as leaving the country, she will give a filled in form which you keep and you’ll sign a book and pay here 100 baht.

4: Now, cross back to number 4, with form from 3 and passport and blue book ( vehicle departure ), here you’ll get another filled in form, cost 100 baht.

 

Hurrah, all done on Thai side of the border.

 

5: Take car across the border and park at 6, take passport to the first window and get Cambodian visa cost 1500baht.

6: Take passport blue book and all paper work here, you’ll get another filled in form, they’ll take you blue book and that will cost 500 baht.

 

hurrah, now you finished, you are now in Cambodia, drive on the right and drive carefully, as far as I can fathom out, there is no insurance you can get for Cambodia.

We went to Siem reap, it takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. The roads are empty till you hit the prom phen/Siem reap road then it gets a bit more exciting, but if you’ve driven aboard before it’s not that bad.

 

Ok, so you’ve enjoyed your stay in Cambodia, it’s time to return.

 

6: when you arrive at the border park at 6, go to office and reclaim the blue book, the form they gave you, give them back.

7: cross the road to 7 and get you’re passport stamped, you are now in no mans land again. Take your car and park somewhere near 8/9.

8: Passport control, fill in TM6 and get stamped back into Thailand, go back to 3 and  get the vehicle signed back into Thailand, you should now have just one piece of paper work left.

9: Go to 9 on the map there you’ll see a young lad sitting at a table, give him the last form and that’s you finished, back in car and away.

 

i hope this helps to dispel any myths about crossing into Cambodia with a car. 

I’ll be glad to answer any questions you may have, but remember I only know the procedure for this one crossing, so please don’t ask about other crossings a I just don’t know and would not like to speculate.

Is there a time limit on how long you can take the car out of the country for?

I wonder what happens if you exceed the 30 days? Do they fine the car for overstay?

 

Actually, some cars go to Cambodia and are never seen again!

Funnily enough, no the car doesn’t need a TM 30, some things get off lightly, GRrrrrr.

No idea what happens after 30 days, maybe your charged import duty on said vehicle.

Very careless to lose ones car in a foreign country, could be very costly.

 

But all’s well that ends well, family and car had a good time.

Been through that border a number of times with my car. Paid customs 100 baht once but nothing on other occasions. No need to leave the blue book behind, you get a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) now and you can leave through a different border as I did back in February of this year. Everything for the car is done at the hut 300m down the road on the right.

Never paid anything on the Thai side either. Cambodians have to pay 200 Baht to enter with their cars, but Thai cars cost nothing.
