Nine thousand dead on the Thai roads this year and counting

Thai caption: Campaign to lessen road death toll: 13th August 57 dead at the scene. Since start of year 9,160 corpses

Daily News reported that 57 people died at the scene of road accidents on Tuesday bringing the total for the year to 9,160.

They caution that this is only those who perish at the scene of accidents. In reality the total death toll is considerably higher.

DPM Prawit Wongsuwan and a top policeman looking into ways to improve conditions on the roads have both admitted in recent days that the death toll in Thailand is in excess of 20,000 per year, notes Thaivisa.

Thai and international organisations have stated that it is likely to be about 25,000 fatalities per year.

Daily News are running a daily campaign to increase awareness and they highlighted speeding and tailgating in their headline today.

They reported on an accident in which a couple in Samut Sakhon were lucky to escape serious injury when a pick-up slammed into their coconut shop after swerving to avoid a parked truck. The driver also survived with minor injuries.

Enforcing the TM30 for Thailand´s safety but doing nothing against more than 20,000 dead people in traffic every year. I think they have the wrong priorities.

20,000 dead people are not a threat to 'national' security'.

how and why and when DOES ONE SWERVE to avoid an already parked object.

One sees it from a distance and then takes the appropriate manouver to drive past.....!!

BUT NO ....thais do not see this as a problem then gets near and thiks OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! there is a parked vehicle THEN HE/SHE swerves to miss said vehicle.....

I have never SWERVED to avoid a parked vehicle, like many others on here WHO CAN DRIVE PROPERLY....

20,000 are dead and it could be much less. It doesn´t matter if they die from bombs or bad, stupid, uneducated driving (often without driver license). And it costs the country billions every year. If farangs would kill 100 Thais per year, they would check us much more. If bad driving kills ten thousands, nobody cares. That´s strange.

When one has got his nose stuck in smart phone and doesn't see the object until the last moment.

Yes, strange indeed. We will never understand their way of thinking.

And how many died on the way to the super hospitals without an emergency OP, or a few hours/days after the accident.

How many of them have lost body parts and are disabled?

The real number is way higher.

It is not rocket science, one of the main problems in Thailand is complacency, Thais know they are able to get away with driving or acting how they want and the police unfortunately to a large degree allow them to do just that.

Offenders need to know and realise there is a credible risk of being caught committing any act that is against the law, and that there will be serious consequences for being caught.

Completly true and eath on the roads is just that, a death.  To those "raping" Thailand it is just another common act by people who are considered worthless by the Elite and above. Murder is not a problem either, you get off with that too.

Until Thais appreciate the sanctity of human life more than money nothing will change.

.... and how many were motorbikes ?

The UK has a similar population and just 1770 deaths. Motorcycles amount to 10% of the seriously injured and killed.

Edit: Motorcycle deaths average 328, so about 18.5% of the total and they represent about 1% of the traffic.

The same thing applies with those driving cars etc, who do far more damage than a kid on a motorcycle who usually just kills himself. It should have been dealt with decades ago when people began driving in numbers, and now it is far, far too late.

What more can be said that hasn't been said already a thousand times? as long as drives and riders disregard the laws and common sense,  corpses will continue to pile up...

Try to change it and the first people to cry foul are the Thais themselves... they like the freedom as it is & except the consequences !
