I just got back from a holiday in my home country.  Yesterday when driving back from the airport and then running a couple of errands, I saw 7-8 different ambulances with sirens blaring heading to an accident scene or hospital.  I also drove by an accident by Wat Chalong  at 17:00 on Chao Fa west where it looked like a car pulled out in front of a motorbike which looked quite serious.

Did I just catch a day that had more accidents than usual, or is this the norm?  Normally I try to avoid driving and all the traffic as much as possible.

What a difference between traffic back in the homeland and the <deleted> drivers/riders here!

20,000 have died on Thai roads so far this year ,does that answer

your question, never mind the difference between UK and Thai roads,

just crossing from Malaysia, in a few hundred yards, the difference is

horrific.

Through out the whole country? Probably not. Within the ground that you personally covered? Possibly yes.

But remember that ambulances don't just attend road accidents. There could be any number of scenarios that require emergency help.

This is Phuket specific, hence the post in the Phuket forum.

I saw two building fires in two days recently. In previous memory I can only recall seeing firsthand one other. If I look at the two fires in two days in isolation it makes for a very different result when comparing the three fires in say five years.

Yes, there are a lot of accidents in Thailand, but I don't personally see an accident every day. You just saw an anomaly in the scheme of things. If you saw and heard the same number of accidents and sirens every day for a month, say, then you could begin to draw different conclusions.

How many other accidents did you see in total last time you were in Thailand? How long were you in Thailandon the previous trip?

I would say i see an average of 2/week at present with that number climbing closer to 5 (ish) in the higher months

I drive to Maikhao every week 2 times.  Average i see 2 ambulance and 1-2 accidents per trip.

So i would say yours was a special day. I also came back from Austria trip and yes traffic here is crazy as always compared with there.

Some days the ambos in Kamala can be out 5 or more times, other days its quiet. Fortunately we have two here now, they used to have to come from Patong or Bang Tao at the very least. Cue the first one normally headed out about 20 minutes after it starts raining. They seem to spend a lot of time scraping wobbly Chinese off the road.

Forgot to post this yesterday. Thursday night the Kamala wee-wa was heard going out on a shout, followed by a bang. Pulling out onto the main drag with blues and twos a motorbike tried to run the light and collided with it. Ended up with THREE ambos involved in the end. ????
