TAT wants night-life establishments to close at 4 am to promote tourism

Excellent idea so long as there is no added noise, I like to hear the Monks when they are coming.

Would it also be possible to make purchasing beers and spirits from 0900 until 1200 to sober persons.

I would also suggest the promotion of Bingo Halls as a means to attract punters, I mean tourists from cloudier climes.

Cricket to be reported upon in Thai TV sports reports to attract many more Indians to the hallowed shores.

Let's look at Pattaya. There are still some Sois without bars, sex and extreme noise. Extending the business hours alone might not be enough for a family friendly resort like Pattaya. It needs booze, sex and noise around the clock everywhere.

It's a sensible proposal. I was lucky enough to be a tourist and enjoy Bangkok before there were closing times. Bars stayed open as long as there were customers. Disco's, karaoke, restaurants, and such could be found that were open until daylight. The whole city was lively all the time. It was just wonderful to experience. Nights were so free and happy to experience.

In the 2000's they took the fun out of the city. People were carded everywhere to be 20+, alcohol could only be purchased during 2 short windows of the day, 5 baht karaoke booths in malls were outlawed, midnight to 1am closing times, many forms of entertainment banned, outdoor beer gardens banned, sexy beer uniforms banned, display of alcohol logos banned, massage parlors could not open until 5pm, discos frequently raided and patrons urine checked, and so on. I do not see these things as progress and prefer the old ways. It's refreshing to see Thai people can admit mistakes were made and try to make amends.

This was all done by Thaksin and Pheu Thai as part of the ingenious war on drugs!

Sad and still in effect after more than 15 years.

I still firmly believe an anarchistic country like Thailand will function best without too many rules AND without elections.

a 2 hour extension fro 2am to 4am doesn't promote tourism, it promotes drunkenness, violence & anti social behaviour.

. . .and is going to rob a lot of non-night-owlers of a decent night's sleep. And just as we'd got used to not having to wear ear-plugs!

Bring in the Casino's

Plenty of casinos around, just quietly.... and plenty of nightlife joints staying open after permitted hours..... Plenty of vested interests in maintaining the status quo

So why was the decision made by government not long ago for early closing at midnight made. Is this a doubledown or backflip? Can't imagine all those families who venture to the family world holiday centre at Pattaya going to a bar until 4 am.

Excellent point! This gov is just wacky. I remember not long ago they came off as wanting to close places earlier and clean up a bit. It seems to be quite more common now a days to for places to close 'too early' in my opinion.

This story mixed with other recent headlines, I believe is a turning point in that they are beginning to accept tourism is being hurt or foreigners are spending less here.

I mean, I go for lunch and I cant order a beer within a shopping mall at many places. <deleted>. Oh it's not proper time yet. You got Somchai selling ciggs and Hong Tong around the corner at all hours.

Nice post! Yeah, sure it's "sensible". Add a dash of 'som nam na' too!

I got the impression, from reading Thai news, that places like Pattaya had changed to be a family oriented holiday destination, but perhaps I missed something...

However, it might help a bit within the the partying group of tourists, and those seeking late nightlife. But there have been long openings hours before, but instability in opening hours – in periods it was 12 Midnight – might have scared some of those visitors away to other destination, and they might wish to see ongoing stable opening hours before planning a return...????

Bringing back "good old time" might be more than just opening hours – as you rightful mention – meanwhile a lot has changed, and the increasing number of tourists since the 1990ies and early early 2000s might have chosen Amazing Thailand for other reasons than nightlife, and they might well outnumber the ones from the good old time that might have left; and do they come back because of two hours longer nightlife...????

On the other hand, great for those destinations with nightlife oriented tourists to add a few more hours to the partytime...????

Perfect, so allow it for a bunch of tourists but not for Thais and Expats?

Hotel rooftop bar in bangkok and chiang mai that makes absolutely no noise as it's on the 30th Floor is not allowed but a <deleted>ty pattaya bear bar next to a condo will be?

Dedicated party areas in bumfack nowhere like RCA where no one lives must close early? They don't annoy anyone and it's mainly Thai students going there.

Just get RID of this rubbish law AND enforce the noise pollution laws.

Every club/bar that does NOT annoy residents can do what they want, the rest has to close at times so people can sleep?

Is that too hard to do? ... a sensible approach that works all over the world except in thailand

They care about the night life. They don't care about the people living here. At least this is my experience. And now perhaps noise until 4... Will try to sell my condo and move somewhere else. Was one of my biggest mistake to buy something here in Pattaya. When I bought the area was quiet. And now when I leave my condo I stand in the middle of bars.

i for one think its a super stupid idea and bars should be open till 6 am and this will bring back all the tourists and i tell you why.

Right after bars close, all the tourists can head straight to visit temples where they can see all the merit making.

Just think how great it will be, being able to kill 2 birds with 1 bullet. Get drunk and visit the temples

An impression that Thai news sources have been giving for a couple or three decades (yes, I was working in Thailand back then, and am again at present) methinks to appease the powers that be.

All you against must be Aussies or English and likely 60 years old that need a nanny to make your warm milk before sleep.

Where I come from we can get <deleted> faced 24/7 for 365 days a year, they will serve you alcohol even if you can't hold onto the bar. Nightclubs finish 7am, but afterclubs start 5am and stay open until it's busy. You can have drugs with you for own consumption and it's 100% legal.

Guess what? We have very little drug/alcohol related crime. And very little road accidents as there is 0 - ZERO - tolerance against driving under influence and the public transport system is so effective that nobody would even think about it.

2 a.m. closings and bikini dancers is what I was offered in Akron, Ohio. Why fly half way around the world for the same thing? Just go to Florida for sunshine and good seafood. 4 a.m. closing time is a good start. I remember arriving to my hotel in Pattaya at 3 a.m. in 1998 and seeing all those bars open. Ahhh, paradise found. Las Vegas tried the family routine with covered showgirls and children's attractions and they lost their core patrons. It took 10 years but they learned their lesson. Let the families frolic at Disney World and a thousand other resorts, and free the mongers to enjoy the one and only Pattaya.

Now we're talking.  What is all this <deleted> about 'I need to sleep', and 'might drink too much and feel funny and crash my moped'.  This forum needs to man up and sprout a pair of nuts.  Otherwise, let's start talking about needlepoint and souffle recipes.  Geez... ????

What can you get at 4am that you cannot get at 4pm?  I was in Soi 4 Sukhumvit Rd Bangkok a few months ago, looking for a pizza restaurant.....really,  and a number of sweet young ladies were suggesting I could have a good time with them....which was around 4pm.  I rest my case!

Might want to rethink all these Buddhist and election and birthday bar closings to really make it effective.

You hit the nail on the head!

Too many of these "no alcohol allowed" days.

People on holidays have worked hard, and saved up, all year long and want to have a good time when they arrive at their holiday destination. It's quite annoying, and I speak from experience, to be finally on holidays only to be told that you can't order a drink.

“Mr. Yutthasak clarified that not every night entertainment establishments would be allowed to operate up to 4 am, saying that only the night spots which are popular among tourists would be considered.”

The next step should be allowing farangs crossing the road on the red lights and not using helmet while driving motorbike.
