Hun Sen, Lt Gen Vichea sue Rainsy in France

Three French lawyers representing Prime Minister Hun Sen and Lieutenant General Dy Vichea yesterday filed two separate defamation lawsuits against former opposition leader Sam Rainsy in a French court. The lawsuits named the three lawyers as Didlier Leick, Luc Brossollet, and Frederic Doyez.

The suits were filed in connection to an allegation by Mr Rainsy that Mr Hun Sen had planted a bomb on board a helicopter in which Lt Gen Vichea’s father was travelling, causing him to die in a crash in 2008. Gen Lundy, former chief of National Police, died when the helicopter crashed in Svay Rieng province.

Mr Rainsy also said Lt Gen Vichea knew why his father was killed and planned to take revenge against Mr Hun Sen, with the support of Interior Minister Sar Kheng. In a press release issued yesterday, the lawyers said they told the Paris Municipal Court that Mr Rainsy had maliciously accused Mr Hun Sen as the man behind Gen Lundy’s death, an accusation that has brought serious effect and must not be tolerated.

So an ex Khmer Rouge officer, now dictator, known for silencing opponents in any way necessary thinks the French courts are going to take this lawsuit seriously? Me thinks he's just doing it to save face in front of his domestic audience.

Dictators use the tools of democracy to advance their grasp of power. Fortunately, his money and intimidation to attain his brand of justice does not extend worldwide.

"brought serious effect"?

It didn't (if true) affect Hun's political career.

It will be interesting to see the plaintiff's evidence for claim of compensation.

yup... the court should throw it right out...

on the other hand, I do believe everyone should be held accountable for non-factual statements made in public
